Chapter 534

“I knew it was her!” Wendy practically shricked, her entire body trembling with a rage that sent sharp, jagged pheromones cutting through the air. Her eyes, fixed on me, were practically spitting fire. My wolf bared her teeth in the dark of my mind, her silver fur bristling at the sheer volume of Wendy’s shrill, un–Alpha–like screeching.
That she–wolf! How can she be so evil, so malicious? She can’t stand me taking you in, she can’t stand you being cherished in the Grant Pack, so she resorts to these vile, underhanded tactics to destroy you!” Wendy’s voice was sharp with venom, her scent sour with misplaced maternal protection. Lola lifted her face, her eyes glistening with tears, and timidly tugged at Wendy’s sleeve. Lola’s wolf remained hidden so deep it was almost non–existent, a coward’s tactic to mask her true, predatory scent.
“Mom,‘ she whispered, “Please don’t say those things about Isabella… Maybe it was just a coincidence of the moon…”
She bit her lip. “And besides, the Elders are professionals. If they gave Vivian such a high score, there must have been a reason.”
Those words were like gasoline hitting a fire, instantly igniting all of Wendy’s fury.
Why else would the Elders give such high scores to the thief who stole Lola’s music? What other reason could there be?
She must have gotten Grayson to help her corrupt the Rite! It’s a setup!
She stole everything that rightfully belonged to Lola, and now she wants to ruin Lola’s future too!
“She really dared!” I could almost hear Wendy’s voice, a shrill shriek, her face twisting with rage, her perfectly applied makeup unable to conceal her fury, as she declared, “Does she think she can do whatever she wants just because the Smith Pack is backing her? I’m still the Luna of the Grant lineage! I won’t let this go!”
And Lola, ever the innocent act. I imagined her, seeing Wendy’s explosive anger, rushing to hug her, playing the part of the deeply concerned pup. ‘Mom, no! Please don’t go after Isabella! Just let it go… I don’t want you and Dad to be troubled because of me… and I really don’t want to see you fight…”
I knew that the more Lola played the ‘sensible‘ she–wolf, the deeper Wendy’s pity would grow, and the hotter her fury would burn.
No! This can’t just be brushed aside!” I could almost hear Wendy’s sharp declaration, her voice slicing through the air like a claw.
I pictured her seizing Lola’s wrist, dragging her towards the stage.
I’m going to get you justice today!” she’d rage, her tone filled with righteous pack indignation. “I’d like to see how Isabella Grant explains herself to me!”
She’d be determined to confront the Elders before they left the Sacred Hall, to “expose my true colors,” as she would undoubtedly put it.
As Wendy pulled Lola along, I caught a quick, chilling flicker of triumph deep in Lola’s eyes.
could almost hear her silent accusation, a chilling whisper forming in my mind: Isabella, you pushed me to this!
Furious, Wendy yanked Lola along, storming forward.
just then, Evan arrived. His brows furrowed as he took in his mother’s contorted face and Lola’s swollen, red eyes. Evan’s wolf let out a low, weary huff within him, clearly exhausted by the toxic atmosphere radiating from the two she–wolves.
Mom? Lola? What’s going on with you two?”
‘Aiden, perfect timing!” Wendy cried, spotting her pup like he was her lifeline. She immediately launched into her tirade. “You wouldn’t believe what your dear cousin has done!”
She recounted everything that had just happened, embellishing every detail and painting me as a manipulative, vicious she–wolf who would stop at nothing to undermine her own pack–sister.
“… She bribed the Elders, stole Lola’s song, and ruined her Rite! She just can’t stand to see our Lola succeed!”
The more Wendy spoke, the angrier she became, her voice rising several octaves until it was a literal howl of frustration,
Evan listened quietly, his expression betraying nothing.
I watched as he waited for Wendy to finish her rant, then he turned his gaze to Lola, who was still sniffling softly beside us. His voice was flat when he finally spoke:
I watched the competition. You had several slip–ups, and honestly, your performance wasn’t quite on par with the top three
I saw Lola flinch, her eyes instantly darting around, a flicker of panic in their depths. It was like he’d just pierced right through her hide, exposing

exactly what she was trying to hide.
It was true. The piece she’d played on stage had been her backup, and I knew she wasn’t as proficient with it as she was with her main selection.
But I knew, even if she had played her original piece, it wouldn’t have made a difference. She simply wasn’t on the same level as the top three
contestants.
Her talent just didn’t measure up to their primal connection to the music!
“I… I…” Lola stammered, fresh tears spilling down her cheeks.
But Wendy immediately flared up, jumping to defend her. “Is this really what we’re talking about right now? Didn’t you hear a word I said? Isabella brought one of her Howlnet sensations into this, and that girl stole Lola’s piece, forcing Lola to switch at the last minute! That’s why Lola choked during the Rite!”
“If you’re still my pup, you should be going after Isabella right now! You should be getting justice for Lola!”
“Mom!” Evan’s brows furrowed even deeper. “You’re so biased against Isabella.”
He looked at his mother, his voice tinged with helplessness and disappointment. I could sense his wolf pacing with frustration, wanting to retreat from the scent of dishonesty.
You don’t have any proof. You’re just taking a few words from Lola and assuming Isabella’s behind some scheme. Mom, do you even realize how serious an accusation it is to slander an Elder judge in an international Rite?”
What evidence do I need?” Wendy snapped, her face flushing crimson with a mix of shame and rage at her son’s persistent questioning. Lola’s score is the biggest piece of evidence! If Isabella hadn’t pulled some dirty trick, even if Lola hadn’t performed her absolute best, she still would’ve easily clinched third place! She would be on her way to Vienna! It was Isabella who single–handedly ruined Lola’s shot!”
She was practically vibrating with rage as she pointed at Lola, her voice a furious whip cracking at Evan. “She’s your sister!” she practically shrieked. How can you side with some stranger over your own blood?”
They’re both my sisters, Evan said.
D
I watched Evan press his brow. It was clear to me that whenever Lola was involved, his mother’s excessive concern made her lose all reason.
It hadn’t been this bad before, but ever since Lola had moved into the Grant den, his mother seemed to have eyes only for her.
He seemed worried about upsetting his mother. His voice softened, gentle as he continued, “Moreover, this isn’t about who to believe; it’s about facts. I don’t want you to act rashly before we figure out the truth of the Covenant.”
Mom, please, just think. What will confronting Isabella so impulsively solve? It’ll only make things worse and make the Grant Pack a laughingstock among the clans.”
More importantly, have you thought about Dad? You know how much he adores Isabella. If you accuse her without any proof and hurt her, what do you think Dad will think? You’re risking your decades–long blood bond with him!”
Evan’s words hit his mother like a bucket of cold water, and for a fleeting moment, I watched the furious spark in Wendy’s eyes flicker, her rage briefly subdued by the fear of losing her Alpha mate.
But the moment her gaze fell on Lola’s face beside her, tear–streaked and radiating an almost heartbreaking vulnerability, I could practically feel Wendy’s simmering rage reignite, flaring up with a vengeance.
And in her eyes, I could see the dawning conviction that I had somehow bewitched her pup too, like some kind of vixen twisting his mind. “So, you’re saying I should just stand by and watch Lola get bullied, and then just swallow it?‘ Wendy’s voice was laced with disappointment and the raw ache of betrayal. “Evan, you’ve disappointed me so much! You don’t believe your own mother, your own sister, but you believe an outsider! A flicker of weariness crossed Evan’s face. His wolf let out a final, defeated whine.
Once his mother dug her heels in, it was impossible to reason with her.
“It’s not that I don’t believe you, I just want you to be rational.” He said, his voice low and firm, “I’ll look into this. Until I figure out what really happened, I need you to do nothing.”
With that, Evan stopped arguing, turned, and strode out of the room, his movements filled with the heavy grace of a troubled hunter. Seeing him leave, Wendy trembled with rage.
She was convinced she had been betrayed by the entire world. Even her own pup wasn’t on her side; he was choosing Isabella!
I watched the tension coil in Wendy’s body, her face a mask of fury and hurt. Just as I thought she might actually snap, Lola, ever the master of

nanipulation, gently tugged Wendy’s sleeve. Her voice was a soft, mournful whisper, dripping with false empathy.
Mom, Brother Aiden is right… maybe we should just let it go… I don’t want to cause any trouble between you and Dad because of me…”
She even managed to force a fragile, trembling smile, a performance of pure self–sacrifice.
I’ll be okay…” she added, her voice barely audible.

That was the final blow. Lola’s feigned martyrdom, her sickeningly sweet act of self–sacrifice, utterly obliterated whatever shred of rationality Wendy
ad left.
could practically see the gears turning in Wendy’s mind: her precious Lola, so wronged, yet so selflessly concerned for her mother’s happiness. It was a ick joke.
And then the realization hit her, solidifying her rage: her mate and pup were abandoning her, aligning themselves with an outsider–me–over her own lesh and blood. The betrayal was palpable, burning in her gaze.
No.
he would not, under any circumstances, allow her darling Lola to suffer this perceived injustice.
Her eyes hardened, a dangerous glint promising retribution. I knew right then she would stop at nothing, using any means necessary within the ancient aws or outside of them, to achieve her twisted version of “justice” for Lola. My wolf pacing inside me felt the shift in the air; a storm was coming to he Silvermoon territory.
