Chapter 564.
Panic, I’m sure, twisted Wendy’s features, her inner wolf ducking its head in a submissive, frantic gesture.
“He knew?” was likely the first thought to claw its way into her mind, her scent spiking with the sharp, metallic tang of fear.
Morn
Then, an inexplicable mix of hurt and fury must have surged through her blood. She was in the middle of a Blood Bond Dissolution, after all. She was severing their ties. Why should she care if the Alpha of the Grant Pack was pleased or not?
“I don’t know what you’re talking about!” I imagined Wendy crying out, her voice high and jagged as she struggled to yank her hand from his. Bur I knew it was no use. His Alpha grip, I could tell, must have been like a silver vise, clamping her wrist firmly with the weight of a dominant he–wolf
“Don’t understand?” Carson’s laugh, I pictured, was a harsh, furious sound that vibrated in the back of his throat–a warning growl. He must have yanked a thick stack of Howl–prints from his pocket and thrown them, hard, straight at Wendy’s face.
“See for yourself!” he’d surely commanded, his pheromones heavy with the scent of ozone and cold stone.
The prints, I knew, fluttered to the floor, scattering around her feet like fallen leaves in autumn. Each one, I was certain, was a snapshot of her with Andrew. It wasn’t just the coffee shop meetings in the neutral zones, or the hushed conversations beneath the Miller Pack’s obsidian towers. Andrew–that illegitimate Alpha–was even visiting Lola at the Healing Sanctuary.
Wendy’s face went utterly white. He’d actually had a sentinel follow her!
“Carson! You bastard!” she shrieked, tears streaming down her face, her Beta heart–core hammering against her ribs.
“A bastard?” Carson scoffed, his wolf practically baring its teeth. Disappointment and fury clashed in his golden eyes, a terrifying storm that threatened to consume Wendy whole.“Wendy, do you even know who Andrew Miller is? He’s Gavin Miller’s spawn! He’s the pup of the she–wolf who killed my sister! He is a mortal enemy of the Grant Lineage!”
“And now, you’re using the Grant Pack’s resources to collaborate with our enemy, all for him?”
You’ve completely dishonored the Grant Pack, and me!”
‘Do you have any regard for the Ancient Wolf Covenant or this family at all?”
Each of his accusations landed like a heavy hammer against her spirit. I could almost feel the way they struck Wendy straight in her heart–core. But she was utterly consumed by her own rage and raw hurt, her wolf howling in a frenzy, too far gone to hear a single word of reason.
Wendy, however, clearly believed he was taking my side–the side of the “dead sister’s niece“-actively trying to suppress her.
‘I didn’t!” Her voice cracked as she protested, tears welling in her eyes. “I didn’t take the Grant Pack’s gold! I use my own assets for the pup sanctuary!”
Carson scoffed, his gaze piercing through her like an Alpha’s judgment. “Your own assets? Where did you get the tribute? Did you sell all your heirloom Furs and enchanted gems? Or did your leech of a brother, Leo, give it to you?”
Wendy’s words died in her throat. I saw her falter, a tell–tale pause that signaled a crack in her resolve. It hit me then. The resources she was pending–they had to be “borrowed” from her brother. She probably convinced herself it was just a temporary loan, that he was simply helping her
Jut.
watched Wendy’s guilty, evasive eyes, and I could feel the coldness seeping into Carson’s demeanor, his Alpha aura turning into a wall of ice. He lowly loosened his grip, then took a step back. The way he looked at the she–wolf he’d been blood–bonded to for over two decades now–it was the gaze of a complete stranger, a wolf looking at a rogue.
Wendy, you have truly, deeply disappointed me.”
I disappoint you?”
The words struck Wendy like a physical blow to her wolf’s pride. She bristled instantly, her whole demeanor shifting, her hackles rising like a cat whose ail had just been stepped on. She snapped her head up, her tear–streaked face a mask of furious resentment.
‘Carson, what right do you have to judge me by the Old Laws?”
Where were you when your precious niece put my pup in the Sanctuary, fighting for her life?”
You were busy criticizing me, lecturing me, all for Isabella’s sake!*
‘I was ridiculed on the Howlnet, a laughingstock across all the territories, and did you ever show an ounce of concern for
your
mate?”
