Chapter 57
My wolf felt a prickle of unease watching Emily’s tears fall.
Jared, his scent a comforting balm in the air, sighed, his hand gently resting on her shoulder.
His voice softened, a rumble that resonated even through my own agitated wolf, “Emily, don’t cry.
I’ve trained alongside Isabella for four years; of course, she’s more adept at the drone tech.
Don’t compare yourself to her.”
Her tears glistened, making her seem impossibly fragile.
She nodded vigorously, trying to stifle her emotions.
Even my wolf ached seeing her distress.
Jared’s wolf, though calmer, sensed the deception.
He shifted slightly, a barely perceptible twitch of his shoulder muscles.
He put away his comm–stone, a small, silver device that pulsed with faint luminescence.
“I don’t have much silver currently.
Once I return to the Silvermoon Pack, I’ll ask my brother for some and send it to you.
I promise I won’t use my sister’s funds.”
Emily mumbled her thanks, head bowed.
But I saw the flicker of triumph in her eyes, a gleam hidden from Jared.
“Foolish me, my wolf snarled, *working silently, expecting nothing!* A few tears, and she’d secured thirty thousand silver pieces!
Back with the pack, Jared said, “Emily, give me that technician’s contact information.
I’ll speak to him about the cost.”
Her hand froze, her heart pounding against her ribs.
She forced a smile, a fragile mask over her fear.
“Okay,” she managed, her voice trembling slightly.
She pretended to search her comm–stone, but instead, frantically deleted the contact.
The fear in her wolf was palpable, a wave of raw panic.
She’d inflated the price by three hundred thousand silver pieces!
Jared remained oblivious.

*After all, repairs cost one and a half million silver pieces each time. Even the wealthy Miller Pack can’t afford that.”
As she deleted the messages, her eyes widened in shock.
“Shouldn’t it cost that much?” she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Jared affectionately ruffled her fur.
His wolf was still relaxed, but my wolf felt the shift in the air, the growing tension.

“We have repairs nearly every moon cycle; one million five hundred thousand per repair would bankrupt the pack.”
Her face drained of color.
She’d been swindled!.
She’d assumed the high–ranking alpha couldn’t fix it, it must cost a fortune.
When the other party asked for only one hundred and twenty thousand, she paid, assuming Jared would reimburse her, so she didn’t question it.
Her wolf whimpered, a low whine of fear and regret.
