Rebecca ended the call, cool with Vance crashing at Catherine’s place. She set the phone down and

went back to sleep.

Half an hour later, the front door creaked open. Vance had come home,

She stirred, lying there for a moment, then forced herself up as he banged into everything in the entryway. In his state, he might ruin that notarized waiver.

She stepped into the living room and found him standing there in a daze.

“Rebecca, come here,” he murmured, recognizing her.

She walked over. “You didn’t mix me up with someone else?”

“Would I mistake my own wife?” he grumbled, slinging an arm around her shoulders.

Rebecca was hit by a wall of alcohol fumes and tried to shove him off. His grip only tightened, and his voice had an edge of excitement. “Push me again, and I’ll fall. You won’t have a husband anymore.”

There was no reasoning with a drunk person. Once they reached the living room, he collapsed onto the sofa, fished a folder from his bag, and thrust it at her. “Here you go.”

She opened it, confirming everything was in order.

He leaned back against the cushions and snorted, “Still checking? Don’t you trust me? Have I ever failed at anything you asked me to handle?”

That was true. There was almost nothing he couldn’t do, but hearing him brag so loudly today was new. He really was hammered.

Rebecca grabbed the papers and started back to her room. He caught her wrist and yanked hard. Her weak legs gave way under the pull, and she tumbled into his arms.

She was leaving in two days and wanted nothing more than to keep everything quiet. She didn’t want any more trouble,

But Vance kept his arms clamped around her waist, breathing booze right in her face. “You know I’m drunk. Why wouldn’t you help me inside, get me water, and change my clothes? Is this how you repay me for running around for you all day?”

Rebecca started to answer, but he pinched her nose. “That’s mistake number one today. There’s a second one.”

“Enough. I’m tired and don’t have time for this.” She braced her hands against his chest and tried to get

“Look at you. So boring.” He pulled her closer. “You were like this in high school, all clueless.”

Rebecca felt a sharp, burning pain, like claws had raked across her heart. So, that was how he had seen her passionate high-school crush: boring.

People tended to tell the truth when they were drunk, and this was straight from his heart.

“Then who is interesting?” she asked with a cold laugh.

“Cathy, obviously,” he answered without missing a beat. “Look how interesting she is, planning that whole charity donation and pushing me out front to take all the credit while she stayed in the background doing everything. You know, when she winked at me in the crowd, it was really, really cute.”

In love, he sounded cute.

Rebecca stayed stone-faced. She quietly unlocked the tablet she had left on the sofa and started

recording.

“Cathy…” He kept his eyes half-closed, smiling. “She washed the seniors’ feet at the center. Shocking. She said it was nothing. She did all that when she volunteered at the hospital.”
