Rebecca stayed calm the whole time. There was no yelling, no cold shoulder, and no drama.

She simply packed her things, checked out of the hotel, and rode home with Vance. She was quiet, as if nothing had happened, acting as detached as a stranger.

Vance glanced at her every time they stopped at a light, stunned by how she was reacting. He had prepared for hours of explanations and apologies, yet none came into use.

When the kidnappers had taken her, the front door had been left wide open, and the delivery bags were still outside. Now everything was neat, the groceries were put away, and the two boxes of cherries sat on the counter.

Rebecca knew they were Desmond’s gift.

Without a word, she changed her shoes, washed up, and put on loungewear. She washed a plate of cherries and stored the rest in the fridge. Then she sat on the sofa, scrolling on her phone and eating the cherries.

“You like cherries? I never knew that before.” Vance sat beside her, popping one in his mouth. “Sweet.”

She glanced at him. “Desmond brought them.”

Vance paused, eager to spit it out and say it wasn’t sweet at all. Instead, he asked, “Why did he bring you cherries?”

Earlier, he had seen the delivery bags and assumed the cherries were her purchase, too. If he had known they were from Desmond, he would have thrown them out.

She looked puzzled. “Just a gift. Does there have to be a reason?”

“He’s a guy,” he explained. “I know how men think better than you do. No man does something nice for a woman for no reason.”

She fixed her gaze on him. He cringed, clearing his throat. “Ahem, I’m different. I give Cathy things because…”

She answered for him, “Because there’s always an angle?”

“No.” He straightened his face. “Cathy and I have known each other since college.”

“Desmond and I were college classmates, too.”

“You’re married and have a family.”

She tilted her head. “The person I married is you, right? Don’t you have a family?”

He fell silent, and she set her eyes back on her phone. “Go ahead with whatever you need to do. You’re acting a bit off, though. If you walk into a contract meeting like this, you’ll lose your shirt.”

He couldn’t read her mind, but she genuinely didn’t look angry.

“You’re really not mad?” he probed again.

“Why do you keep needing me to be mad? I’m not,” she sighed.

She didn’t know how many times she had to say it. This topic had gone on and on too much lately.

“You’re not mad that I chose Cathy?” He sounded unsure.

She shook her head. “I’m really not.”

People only cared when they loved someone. But when they stopped loving, none of it mattered anymore. Just like Vance had never cared about her.

“Why?” He felt like none of this made sense.

Given how much she loved him, how could she not care that he had abandoned her in a life-or-death

moment?

Because she didn’t love him anymore. She had told him the answer long ago. He had never believed her, always thinking she was just throwing a tantrum.
