Chapter 215
Rebecca decided not to rush it.
If she brought up divorce now and met Vance’s refusal, she might not be able to leave.
She would write a heartfelt divorce letter, leave it for him the day she flew out, and give him a month to think it over. When she came back, they could finalize everything. She could get the divorce papers right before school started.
That evening, she was boiling water when Vance came home.
He leaned against the door frame of the kitchen. “Thought I’d stepped back in time. You look exactly like you did in high school.”
His eyes seemed to be smiling. The setting sun poured through the window and lit his face in a hazy golden glow. She couldn’t quite see his expression.
She turned back to rinse some green onions. Suddenly, his arms wrapped around her waist from behind.
“Look at the sunset outside. So beautiful. Doesn’t it remind you of that day we went on the picnic, right when the sun was going down?” He rested his chin on her shoulder. “Everyone was lined up for photos, but you were still packing up, all serious. You were wearing a white T-shirt, and your school jacket was off on the side. Your hair was tied in a ponytail, and you were facing the sunset.”
She couldn’t bear to think about it. If, at any moment in these past five years, he had shown this warmth, she would have been touched deeply.
Now it was too late. But it wasn’t a bad thing.
“That sunset was just as beautiful as today’s,” he whispered, tightening his arms.
“It isn’t the same,” she said.
“How so?” He tilted his head, half-teasing. “You’re not about to say we’re older now, are you?”
That thought had never crossed her mind.
“I’m the one who got older. You haven’t changed at all,” he added,
Actually, she had been lost in the past. Back then, when she was packing up alone, everyone called her over to take a photo. She didn’t know if it was because his drumstick gave her extra strength or if it was the shouting that made her anxious.
Either way, she ended up doing several backflips across the grass to join them. They had all clapped.
Could she still do that now?
Today’s escape worked because Desmond had done most of the work. She didn’t mention any of it, and Vance probably had forgotten. It was good that he had.

She kept watching the setting sun. “I’ve changed, too.”
“No.” He brushed the stray hair from her cheek. “In my heart, you’ll always be the same.”
It turned out he knew how to say sweet things, but she didn’t understand his sudden sentiment.
“You’re not feeling guilty, are you?” she teased, looking back.
He was clearly trying to make up for what he had done that day.
“No, of course not,” he stammered.
She sneered at his denial. “Don’t be. There are plenty of other times you should have felt it. You don’t have that much time to hang around me, and I don’t have time to deal with you.”
He snapped back to normal, releasing her and straightening up. “You know, you could try being romantic once in a while instead of being so serious every day.” (2
