“They’re my best friends, and you’re my wife. It’s hard for me if you guys don’t get along,” Vance explained. “They all want to make peace with you, and Cathy feels terrible about what happened this morning. She wants to have a nice talk. Do it for me, okay? Eat with everyone and accept their goodwill.”
Rebecca laughed at the absurdity of it. “Your friends talked trash about me and called me a cripple behind my back. That’s their goodwill? If I don’t accept it, then it’s my fault?”
His brow wrinkled. “They already apologized. Why do you keep bringing it up?”
She laughed, feeling utterly incredulous. So, in his mind, an apology fixed everything.
“And Catherine sleeping naked with you… Was that goodwill too? I’m just not generous enough?”
He slammed his palm on the table. “What the hell are you talking about?”
She sneered, having just poked a sore spot.
After the outburst, he seemed to remember the purpose of the meal. He sighed, “You always have to push my buttons. Fine. I was wrong to raise my voice just now, but you can’t keep being so petty.”
What a big nerve! He slept with another woman and called her petty.
She had slipped up that day while knowing how he would react. She had promised herself she wouldn’t waste any more emotion on him or his circle, yet she had still let it out.
She stood up, but he pressed her back down.

She almost laughed at how relieved he sounded. It wasn’t like she was planning anything dramatic.
For the next two days, she had decided that whatever happened, she would endure it. Small concessions to avoid bigger problems. 1
While she was still in the bathroom, she heard voices outside.
Catherine and the others had arrived. As soon as Catherine walked in, she immediately asked for the menu. Vance told her the dishes had been ordered.
“You didn’t order the set meal, did you? They always sneak in those cheap things I don’t like,” she grumbled, her voice as loud as ever.
“No, of course not,” Vance replied. “Everything’s to your liking. See if you want anything else.”
Rebecca almost laughed while washing her hands in front of the mirror. So, that line belonged to

Catherine must have looked at the order because she sounded delighted. “Wonderful! Everything is what I like. You’re the best, Vance. No one understands me better than you do.”
Vance laughed heartily.
That was true. No one in the world knew Catherine better than him, while he knew nothing about Rebecca’s preferences.
Rebecca chose to stay put. Eavesdropping could be entertaining.
She heard Catherine ask, “You’re taking time off the day after tomorrow, right?”
“Yeah. The first vacation I’ve given myself in years.” Vance sounded happy.
“Let’s go to the islands! Remember? You promised to take me years ago, but you guys were always working. Every summer I spent waiting while you worked overtime,” Catherine whined.
