Five Years of Marriage to Mr. Bradford (by Koi Fish) novel Chapter 254

Chapter 254

A hoarse voice finally answered. “Not really,”

Nancy frowned, wondering if Vance was sick.

“May I come in?”

“Mmm…”

Inside, she was surprised to find him still in bed.

“Sir, are you unwell?”

“Water…”

He hadn’t had any water since he came back. Now his throat was burning like fire.

“Okay, hold on.”

She had Cecilia get some water, took the glass, and reminded Cecilia not to touch anything before limping back into the bedroom.

Vance struggled to get up. The water went down his sore throat, causing him immense pain.

Nancy noticed his flushed face and knew from experience it was a fever. She grabbed the thermometer, and it showed 103.1 degrees.

After he lay back down, she spoke gently. “Sir, that’s a high fever. You should go to the hospital.”

He shook his head, refusing every suggestion-even a clinic visit.

Worried, Nancy dug through the medicine cabinet. She had raised Cecilia and cared for Rebecca for five years, so she knew the basics and found the right pills.

Through the haze, Vance managed, “Have Rebecca sleep in the guest room tonight so she doesn’t catch it.”

Nancy said nothing, feeling little sympathy.

Even though it was Vance who hired her, Nancy had stayed by Rebecca’s side for five years and understood her pain.

Still, Vance had always been fair to her, and right now, she was still the housekeeper. She couldn’t walk away and leave him behind just like that.

She started tidying the room with one hand, limping around. His clothes were streaked with mud. She had no idea how he had gotten so filthy or how long the stains had been there. By now, they had dried into a stiff, stubborn crust,

have gone to get that filthy?

The clothes clearly needed professional cleaning, and she put them in a bag. Noticing the fridge was empty, she headed to the store with Cecilia for groceries and dropped off the clothes at a laundromat.

40 minutes later, they returned to the apartment. Nancy cooked something light while Cecilia helped cheerfully.

When the food was ready, she checked on him again. Vance’s bloodshot eyes were clearer now; the

fever had subsided.

“Sir, the meal is ready,” she whispered.

He had no appetite; even swallowing hurt. Sobering up a little, he asked in a hoarse voice, “Why are you

here?”

She explained she had come to pack.

He blinked. “Pack? Where are you going?”

“I-I’m looking for another job.”

He frowned. “Aren’t you taking care of Rebecca anymore? Is the pay too low? Want a raise?”

“No, not like that,” she replied, quickly shaking her head.

She couldn’t bring herself to say the real reason: Rebecca wasn’t coming back.
