Chapter 256
The illness came crashing down like a mountain.
Vance thought the medicine had fixed him, but the moment he lay down, the fever roared back that evening. It rose and fell for three straight days. Only on the fourth day did it finally stay down.
He had lost a lot of weight and looked hollowed out, with zero energy. The office was out of the question.
Catherine, Aiden, and the others kept messaging in the group or private chat, asking where he had gone. He didn’t want them to worry, so he simply said he was resting at home and handling a few things.
On the fifth day, he received a call from the couture studio.
“Mr. Bradford? The custom autumn collection Mrs. Bradford ordered months ago is ready. When would it be convenient for delivery or shipping? We just need to check if any alterations are required.”
Vance’s wardrobe had always been Rebecca’s domain. He knew the clothes came mostly from private couture plus some ready-to-wear lines, but he had never handled the details. He just paid.
The staff member added, “Mrs. Bradford’s phone has been unreachable, and we couldn’t get her on WhatsApp. She left your number on file, so we had to call. Sorry to bother you.”
“Men’s or women’s?”
“Both. She ordered them at the start of the year, they just finished.”
He checked the time, knowing it was night in Europe. Rebecca was supposed to be asleep.
After lying in bed for four days, he was eager to stretch his muscles.
“I’ll come by now.”
“Great. I’ll text the address.”
“Okay.”
40 minutes later, he walked into the studio. The staff member laid out seven or eight sets-all for him. Rebecca had ordered only one piece for herself.
“Mrs. Bradford always orders mostly for you,” the staff member explained. “She rarely gets anything for herself.”
Vance nodded and tried the garments on,
“Why didn’t you have me try them before?”
“Mrs. Bradford said you were always busy, so we delivered everything to the house. She would have your try them at home and let us know what needed fixing. This time we couldn’t reach her, so we didn’t want to drop them off unannounced.”

The staff member helped him into the jacket.
“It fits perfectly. Actually, Mrs. Bradford never needed alterations. She knows your measurements so well that it comes out right the first time.”
Vance froze, remembering the handful of times a year Rebecca had asked him to try on clothes. He had never once done it, always saying that they were fine and that he was busy.
He couldn’t admit to the staff member that he had never tried anything on. Yet somehow, every piece had fit perfectly anyway.
“Anything not to your liking, sir?” the staff member asked.
He turned left and right. “No, it’s great.”
“There are a few more sets,” the staff member said, ready to show him the rest.
“Just pack them up. I’ll take them home.” He slipped off the jacket, but the sleeve caught on his cufflink.
