Vivian’s update wasn’t positive. She only found that Catherine and Aiden had been spending a lot of time together lately, but they were always close.

“I told Wade to keep digging. We’ll wait for his update?” Vivian said.

“Okay. Thank you,” Rebecca replied. “Oh, and I brought you a gift from the tour. We’ll meet up in a couple of days, and I’ll give it to you.”

Now she had no choice but to wait for Vivian’s lead and the police’s update. Gabriel had told her to sleep, but how could she?

She lay in the dark with the lights off, trying to follow his advice and think of nothing. Still, her mind roared.

Exhausted, she closed her eyes, hoping to keep her strength up, but the second she started to drift, Josette would enter her mind and call for help.

She would jolt awake, her heart thumping wildly.

In the dream, Josette looked almost skeletal in a blue sweater. Hunched over, she whispered for help.

She had never dreamed of anyone so clearly. Every wrinkle on the face and every strand of white hair was perfectly visible. It was so vivid that even in the dream, her heart ached.

She pressed her hand to her chest and cried silently in the dark. “Grandma, where are you?”

The night dragged on like that, tossing between sleeplessness and the same nightmare. She even started to believe Josette was living the exact horror.

Then, in the early morning, a message finally came. An unknown account requested to add her on WhatsApp with the note: [Want to know where Josette is?]

Her exhausted body surged with adrenaline. She accepted instantly and fired off: [Where is she? Who are you?]

They only sent over a video. The second Rebecca opened it, she nearly broke down.

Josette lay curled on a filthy bed in some dim, rundown room, her body twisted like a dead branch. In just days, the few silver strands in her hair had turned completely white.

Rebecca had video-called her right before the flight. There hadn’t been this much white then. If the camera hadn’t been zoomed in on her face, Rebecca wouldn’t have believed it was her.

Josette was almost unrecognizable, mirroring that in Rebecca’s dream. Her features were distorted, her eye sockets hollowed out. Her skin was dry, dark, and rough, with wrinkles deepening like the cracks in old tree bark.

Tears poured down Rebecca’s face. Her fingers shook so badly she could barely type.

Furious, she demanded: [Who are you? Where did you hide her? What do you want?]

The reply came: [Seen enough? It’s your grandma, right?]

Rebecca: [Cut the crap!]

The answer: [$30 million.]

Rebecca: [Account!]

If she had the account, she could trace them..

But they were careful: [No account.]

Rebecca: [Then how? $30 million in cash? You want me to load it in a truck?]

The kidnapper: [That’s your problem. Figure it out, and be quick. I don’t know how many more days she can last.]

Every word stabbed her heart. She typed more, but they went silent.

She clenched her jaw, knowing this was not the time to cry. She forwarded the video to Vivian and asked Wade to analyze it. Maybe the brief glimpse of the window could reveal the location.
