Chapter 311
Hugo: [Something must’ve gone down.]
Gabriel caught the hint and let out a low, knowing chuckle: [Now things are getting interesting.]
Hugo: [You sure we shouldn’t fill Ms. Perry in on any of this?]
Gabriel: [No need. I want a front-row seat to whatever mess these clowns cook up next.J
Hugo guessed Gabriel was trying to shield Rebecca from the ugly side of things and send a clear message: cutting all ties with Vance.
Anyway, with him there, both Rebecca and Josette were under tight protection. Nothing would go wrong.
Gabriel had just pocketed his phone when Josette stirred in bed. Her eyelids fluttered, and a thin, raspy whisper escaped her mouth. “Becky…”
Rebecca and Gabriel shot to their feet at the same time, flanking the bed like bookends.
“Grandma, I’m right here. I came back.” Rebecca cradled her grandmother’s hand, swallowing the lump in
her throat.
It cracked something open in Josette’s clouded mind. Hot tears leaked from the corners of her eyes. Becky, stay away. I’m dirty. Don’t come near me.”
Rebecca’s chest tightened like a vise. She leaned in until their cheeks touched. “No, you’re not. We’re at the hospital, and you’re safe. No one’s gonna hurt you again. Look, you’re on an IV. All fresh and clean. Don’t worry about anything.”
She pressed a gentle kiss to Josette’s cheek, just like how Josette used to soothe her as a child. Realizing she was indeed safe, the old lady hugged back, and they both cried.
Gabriel watched silently, then stepped forward to wrap them in a careful embrace.
“It’s okay. It’s all over now,” he said.
“Is that Vance?” Josette murmured, squinting.
Rebecca was shocked, “Grandma, can you see?”
“Is it Vance?” Josette squinted harder, trying to focus.
“I’ll call the doctor,” Gabriel said, already stabbing the call button.
The door flew open. A heavy shoulder slammed into him, shoving him sideways.
“Grandma, it’s me, Vance. I’m here!” Vance barreled in at Josette’s calling.
She frowned and yanked her hand back.
Hurried footsteps thundered down the corridor, and medical staff rushed in. Rebecca stepped aside so

the nurse and the doctor could get to the bed. Vance had no choice but to do the same.
The doctor performed a careful examination, lingering on the eyes. Finally, he turned to Rebecca and Gabriel. “It’s a temporary loss of blood flow to the retinas from diarrhea and dehydration. It will clear up. Overall, her vitals are markedly better than when she was admitted. With rest, nutrition, and her solid baseline health, she’s got a strong shot at a full recovery.”
Rebecca breathed a sigh of relief, and the doctor continued, “I’ll tweak the meds. Buzz me if anything
changes.”
Once the staff left, Rebecca was about to settle in when Vance swooped in again, seizing Josette’s hand. “Grandma, I’m right here. What would you like to eat? I’ll get it for you.”
But Josette pulled away a second time.
Vance’s voice cracked with disbelief. “Grandma? It’s me, Vance.”
She looked exhausted, closing her eyes and waving him off.
