“Let the patient rest.” Gabriel snatched the back of Vance’s collar and hauled him away from the bed.
Unable to hold back anymore, Vance spun around and threw a punch.
Gabriel caught his wrist, hissing, “I said Josette needs rest. Conduct yourself now!”
“On what basis are you telling me to do anything?” Vance tightened his jaw. “I’m her grandson-in-law. What are you?”
“On the basis…” Gabriel said calmly, “I could toss you out right now.”
“Fine! Let’s take it outside!” Vance clamped onto Gabriel’s wrist, trying to yank him toward the door.
Rebecca looked at Vance coldly. “Are you done making a fool of yourself?”
He didn’t let go. His brows knotted as he turned on her. “Why do you keep siding with him? We’ve known each other for 12 years. How long have you known this clown? A week? A month? And you’re riding for him like he hung the moon? Do you even know his past? Is he really trustworthy?”
She didn’t even blink. “So what? Should I start comparing timelines with Catherine? Who has known you longer?”
The name hit Vance like a freight train. His brain short-circuited, flashing back to that morning scene in her apartment. He stumbled backward, the color draining from his face.
“Just leave,” she whispered. “I don’t want to look at someone who’s been tainted, and I surely won’t let them touch my grandmother.”
Her voice was low so Josette wouldn’t hear, but every syllable sliced him like broken glass.
“Rebecca, you…” His mouth hung open as he felt the burn of that tag. It was worse than the harshest rebuke.
He intended to ask if she had found out about everything, but the words caught in his throat. He couldn’t voice it, terrified of the answer.
“Door’s that way,” Gabriel said firmly, stepping between them.
Vance searched Rebecca’s face one last time and found nothing but cold disgust. Something deep inside him cracked and collapsed. He sucked in a ragged breath and walked out.
Gabriel shut the door with a decisive click, and Rebecca sank back onto the stool, as if nothing had happened.
She took Josette’s hand and murmured, “Grandma, how about soup? Something warm and gentle?”
The doctor had suggested liquids..
Josette squeezed Rebecca’s fingers, shook her head, and slipped back into sleep.

“This isn’t going to work. She needs nourishment,” Gabriel muttered, already dialing. “I’ll have Hugo prepare something and bring it over.”
“Cooking?” Hugo blinked. “Any dietary restrictions?”
He had only been back a short while and was still living in a hotel. But he could let the hotel chef do it.
“No weird spices and no heavy cream. Just make some soup with the best ingredients and simplest prep,” Gabriel ordered. “Stand over the chef so he doesn’t get creative.”
He returned to bed, finding that his grandmother had drifted off again. She still didn’t know who he was.
Once she was discharged, they’d need a place to stay. He could live in hotels, but Josette deserved
comfort.
He decided to assign this task to Hugo. Even if it was only for a month, they’d buy it outright and make it
perfect.
His mind then drifted to Vance. He assumed Rebecca owned properties tied to that man’s name.
That was not fine. There was no way he’d let her sleep under any roof Vance had paid for. 1
