The morning meeting had ground on for four brutal hours. It was already past lunchtime when the conference room suddenly fell pin-drop silent.

The agenda was already finished, but everyone exchanged uneasy glances, waiting for Vance to call it. Yet the man just sat there, lost in thought, like there was more to discuss.

Aiden cleared his throat. “Mr. Bradford, anything else?”

Vance snapped back. “Oh, no. Thanks, everyone. Meeting adjourned.”

Chairs scraped back as everyone stood up. Just then, the door swung open, and in came a syrupy voice.” Hey, you guys have been killing it. Lunch is on me. Let’s eat right here in the room.”

Catherine breezed in with two enormous takeout bags. “There’s way more outside. I’ll grab the rest once we unpack these.”

The room erupted in cheers.

“Mrs. Bradford feeding the troops. Legend!”

“Madam, we’ve got it.’

“Thanks, boss lady. You’re the real MVP!”

Catherine chuckled, her eyes crinkling. “This is nothing. You guys are the ones holding this place together.”

Turning to Vance, she added, “Your lunch is waiting in your office. Want to eat there?”

The room exploded with good-natured teasing.

“Special delivery for the boss!”

“Not fair.”

“We want to see what he got.”

Those people on the core team often joked around, but Vance didn’t crack a smile that day. His face stayed carved from stone.

Aiden jumped in fast. “He has been working around the clock on the new business expansion plan. Let’s cut him some slack.”

Amid the laughter, Vance slipped back to his office.

Lunch was already laid out on the coffee table. The food was from his favorite spot, but he had zero appetite. He just needed to drop his laptop and head out again.

Aiden and Catherine followed him in. Catherine looked up at him cautiously. “Vance…”

He turned and met her watery eyes. She dropped her gaze, dabbing at her eyes. “I swear I don’t know why they started calling me Mrs. Bradford.”

“It’s just a joke,” Aiden said smoothly. “Besides, you deserve that title.”

Vance closed his eyes. The horrible morning slammed into him once again.

“It’s all my fault.” Catherine’s voice wobbled. “I shouldn’t have come. I just heard you guys have been working around the clock, so I thought I’d help. I’m sorry I messed up. It won’t happen again.”

The knot in Vance’s chest finally loosened. He sighed, “It’s not on you. I know what you were trying to do.

We’ve known each other forever. This one’s on me.”

He pulled out his phone, opened the chat with her, and sent a transfer. “I’ve been slammed. Go buy yourself something nice.”

“Vance!” Her voice suddenly sharpened. “What do you take me for?”
