“It’s not like that.” Vance pinched the bridge of his nose. “I genuinely don’t have time for this now.”

“I know you’re busy.” Catherine’s tears spilled freely. “Everyone calls me a gold-digger. Do you think of me that way, too?”

“That’s not what I meant.”

“You do!” She snatched her phone and sent the money straight back, crying harder. “I don’t want your money. The whole world can think I’m after your wallet. I don’t care. I only care what you think of me.”

“I get it. I do,” he said repeatedly.

“Good.” She smiled through tears. “Come and eat. I got your favorite poached fish.”

“You two go ahead. I need to go handle something,” he said, starting for the door.

“Grab a bite first,” she said, already opening the containers.

“I’m good.” He scrolled his contacts, found a number, and dialed. “Nancy? It’s me, Vance.”

Catherine perked up at the name and started following him.

He continued, “Here is the thing. Rebecca is back, and her grandma is in the hospital. We need someone reliable to help. If you are not locked into anything else, could you come back? Yeah, the timeline’s flexible. Long-term would be great. At least, until the patient is stable. Good. I’ll pick you up tomorrow.”

Catherine followed him all the way to the elevator. Vance stepped in, turned, and froze.

“I just wanted you to come back and eat,” she explained quickly. “Are you sure you’re not hungry?”

“Yeah,” he replied. “Rebecca’s grandma is in the hospital. I need to get over there.”

“Oh, of course. Go ahead and check on her,” she said thoughtfully. “Is she sick? What happened?”

He brushed it off. “It’s nothing serious. Don’t worry.”

Those few careless words were all Catherine needed to breathe easy.

It looked like he was still in the dark. Had that shadowy man not told him? Not Rebecca either?

Anyway, the secret was being held. Soren and his family definitely wouldn’t spill.

But Vance was bringing that backwoods housekeeper back? She decided to make a little trip to Cecilia’s school. $4
