Arriving at the hospital, Vance parked the car, grabbed the soup container, and strode into the inpatient

building.

But the moment he stepped into the elevator lobby and reached for the button, a couple of big men in black T-shirts closed in like a human wall.

His hackles rose in an instant. “Who are you?”

“Mr. Bradford,” the lead man said flatly.

“How do you know my name? What do you want?”

“Please go back. You’re not going up.”

“What gives you the right to stop me? You think you’re above the law?”

“Just doing our job. Not letting you go up to disturb the peace is the wish of the patient’s family.”

“Family? That smug bastard? What makes him think he can butt in?” Vance snapped, recalling how that man had kept provoking him.

“Mr. Bradford, language. We’ve been perfectly civil. Foul language tends to have consequences.” The bodyguards stayed polite, but their thick arms flexed like coiled springs.

“What, are you gonna hit me? We have laws here!” Vance was undaunted, even as the circle tightened.

He didn’t believe they’d do anything reckless there in public.

The lead man answered calmly, “No, sir. We’re polite and reasonable. We definitely won’t throw hands in broad daylight.”

They’d only do it in a dark alley with a sack over the head.

Facing the wall of muscle, Vance found it hard to break through and get into the elevator.

The man added, “Save yourself the trouble. It’s not happening.”

Vance was furious, but he couldn’t start a brawl in the hospital lobby. Worse, these people knew who he was, while he had zero clue about who they were.

Knowing that Rebecca’s local SIM was back online, he dialed her, but she didn’t answer.

Without a choice, he texted: [I’m downstairs in the lobby with soup for Grandma, but security won’t let me up. Can you tell them to back down?]

Rebecca had felt the buzz and chosen to ignore the call. Then the message came in, leaving her confused.

But instead of dwelling on it, she simply typed back: [She already ate. No need.]

His reply came fast: [Are you really going to drag her into this? No matter what happened, she’s always been good to me. Can’t I at least repay her kindness? Even a regular friend would do that.]

Rebecca: [We’re not even regular friends. Being strangers is the best we can manage, and Josette doesn’t want to see you. So, stop coming here. Once she’s discharged, we’ll finalize the divorce.]
