Chapter 318
Aiden blinked. “I know. You already told me.”
Vance muttered, “She still wants a divorce.”
The office went dead quiet.
Aiden spoke. “If she wants out, let her go. You’ve tried everything and never screwed her over. To you, this is a relief.”
“A relief?” Vance echoed blankly.
“Yes,” Aiden kept going. “This marriage wasn’t what you wanted in the first place. Back then, you had no choice but to marry her. You’ve been carrying that weight for five years. Now that she is asking to leave, you can just sign the agreement and breathe.”
Vance’s face turned to stone.
“You’re not upset about it, are you?” Aiden probed.
Vance stayed silent.
“I get it,” Aiden sighed. “Five years together. Feelings creep in. You’d miss a pet after five years, but forced love never works. Time will dull the pain. Most importantly, you’re not dumping her. She is the one leaving.”
“Say no more.” Vance leaned back, rubbing his temples.
“All right, forget it. Come on, let’s grab a drink and clear your head,” Aiden said, pulling at his arm.
But Vance didn’t budge. “Not tonight. You guys go ahead.”
“No, you’re the engine,” Aiden insisted.
Vance closed his eyes, exhausted. “I can’t. I promised her.”
“Promise?” Aiden was confused.
“I promised her,” Vance murmured, almost in a trance, “never to drink again.”
“Are
you really not going?” Aiden asked again, worried about his state.
Getting no reply, Aiden hovered for a moment, then left the office. His mind drifted to the man Vance had asked him to investigate.
Strangely enough, there was no information about the man at all.
The next day, Rebecca was overjoyed to see Josette visibly improving. The weight loss wouldn’t reverse overnight, but Josette’s spirit was brighter, her color better.
During rounds, the doctor confirmed steady progress.

Josette held Rebecca with one hand and Gabriel with the other, her eyes shining with happy tears. “I thought I’d never see you guys again.”
“Of course, you would,” Rebecca said, leaning against her shoulder. “Gabriel and I have decided that we’ll be staying together as a family from now on.”
Of course, that family didn’t include her parents or brother. She’d been completely focused on Josette these past two days and hadn’t spared them a thought.
Vance’s text arrived: [I brought Nancy to help take care of Josette. Let us come up.]
Rebecca was confused, not sure what was holding him up.
“What’s wrong?” Gabriel asked, noticing her expression.
She showed him the message, and he asked, “Who’s Nancy? Can we trust her?”
She nodded. “She took care of me for five years.”
“I’ll go down and check.”
“I’ll come along.”
It was a good chance to make everything clear with Vance and stop the constant pestering.
Gabriel thought for a moment and nodded. With him right there, nothing would go sideways.
