Chapter 319
Rebecca saw Vance again..
He looked wrecked with hollow cheeks, deep circles under his eyes, and a stale stench of cigarettes clinging to his body.
She wrinkled her nose before she could stop herself,
He noticed and awkwardly cleared his throat. “Sorry, a client came to the company this morning, and we smoked a few cigarettes.”
He waved Nancy forward. “Both you and Grandma need proper care. Although…”
He paused, glancing at Gabriel. “Although you could hire someone new, Nancy is an old hand who took good care of you before.”
Seeing Nancy again felt both comforting and ironic. They had been married for five years, and in that household, the person Rebecca was closest to was not her husband, but the housekeeper.
If Nancy were free, she could come back and help. But if she had other commitments, Rebecca didn’t upend her plan for such a short time.
So, she asked Nancy’s opinion. The latter readily said she had the time and would love to help.
Rebecca finally relaxed, having been used to Nancy’s care anyway.
Normally, they would have taken Nancy upstairs and parted ways. But Vance stayed rooted in place.
“Rebecca…” he called out.
Rebecca sighed under her breath, telling Gabriel, “I’ll talk to him for a minute.”
Seeing him frown, she shook her head. “It’s fine. Just a few words.”
“I’ll be right here,” he said, staying put.
Vance fumed at Gabriel’s constant presence, but he couldn’t let it out in front of Rebecca.
“Come on.” She walked out of the lobby into the small garden.
Vance followed, finally having a chance to face her alone. He forced a smile, starting, “When will Grandma be discharged? I’ll get things ready and come pick her up.”
She held his gaze. “We’re not going back there.”
Vance’s face went pale with disbelief. “What? You’re not staying at home? Where will you live? Are you still upset? It’s okay. You don’t have to speak to me. I’ll wait until you are ready.”
Rebecca stayed silent; she certainly would not tell him she was only staying a month before leaving again. She didn’t want him to make some desperate scene that might trap her.

“I know you’re hurt, but we have a long life ahead of us,” he said, his voice cracking. “You’ll see. I never wanted to separate from you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you.”
She remained calm. “I really do want a divorce. Grandma would be discharged in five days. The moment she’s out, we’ll go straight to the courthouse. The agreement is in the drawer. I presume you’ve seen it. If you have any objections to the terms, say them now.”
“I object. I don’t…”

“If you don’t want to go in person, I can file online. I’m not trying to bleed you dry, so don’t make this harder than it has to be. Let’s end it with some dignity.”
She pulled out her phone, ready to start the online filing process.
