Rebecca shook her head. “Sonia is Aiden’s wife, so it makes sense for her to attend that event. If she wanted the gown, I’d hand it over in a heartbeat. You’re representing Vance’s company? In what capacity?

Catherine faltered, her eyes darting to Sonia. “I…”

Sonia slid her arm free and gave Rebecca a small smile. “It’s fine. That gown looks beautiful on you and suits your skin tone. I already have my custom gown ordered.”

“Sonia?” Catherine gaped, surprised that Sonia didn’t take her side.

Before they came, Aiden had told Sonia to look out for her.

Sonia turned to another salesperson. “Help me match shoes to my custom.”

She then walked away toward the footwear display. Catherine stood alone, facing Rebecca, the assistant, and the red gown.

“I know you’re jealous of the bond Vance, Aiden, and I have,” she said righteously. “But don’t twist my intentions into something ugly. I’m attending the banquet as an assistant. The company didn’t become what it is by accident. You’ve been living comfortably at home and have no idea how hard he works. Landing Rossi would be a game-changer. This banquet really matters to him.”

“I know.” Rebecca reached into her bag and pulled out her phone.

She dialed Vance’s number and put it on speaker. Catherine grew anxious. “Why are you calling him?”

Rebecca ignored her, waiting for the line to get through. Catherine pulled back, regaining her confidence.

Vance had always taken her side anyway. Even when she and Rebecca were both kidnapped, he had chosen her. Rebecca’s effort now was just futile.

Vance was having a meeting; his hushed tone and the background noises said it all.

“Hang on,” he whispered, surprised and delighted.

She waited as he strode into the corridor, then spoke normally. “What’s up? Where are you? I’m coming over right now.”

“Aren’t you in a meeting?” she asked casually.

“It’s not that important. Aiden and the team can handle it. Where are you? I’ll head over now.”

“No need. Just want to ask you something.”

“Go ahead.”

“The agreement we signed… You haven’t forgotten it, right?”

He paused. “Of course not.

Unease settled in his chest because he hadn’t honored every line. In fact, he’d just gotten more creative, thinking that she didn’t know.

“Good.” She glanced at Catherine, who was already unraveling. “One clause states that Catherine may not hold any position at your company or any affiliate, or all your assets become mine. Correct?”

“Yes,” he replied quickly, having abided by that clause strictly.

“So, Catherine isn’t your assistant?”

“Of course not.”

His voice came through, crisp and final. Catherine’s panic twisted into raw anger.

“Another clause,” Rebecca continued. “You may not spend another cent on her. If you do, I’ll reclaim it and take all your assets. Correct?”
