Catherine refused to be outdone. When the waterworks failed, she switched tactics.
“I’m sorry, Bella,” she apologized with an earnest expression.
“Don’t bother.” Isabelle waved it off, turning to Lucas. “Am I that close to her?”
His brain flatlined. “What are you talking about?”
She gave a cold, humorless laugh. “Then why is she addressing me like we’re family?”
“That’s enough,” Aiden interjected, unable to hold back anymore. “We are a family here.”
“I’m talking to Lucas. What’s it to you?” Isabelle shot back. “She can get cozy with anyone but my husband. Lucas doesn’t have a sister, and we are not related.”
Aiden was lost for words, just glaring at Lucas, who was already sweating bullets.
He sidled up to Isabelle and whispered, “Honey, please don’t make a scene on this big occasion. It’s embarrassing.”
She itched to twist his ear, holding back only for public decorum. She gritted her teeth. “Embarrassing? I’m your wife. Sonia is Aiden’s wife. Rebecca is Vance’s wife. We’re here openly and legitimately. Who is
the real embarrassment?”
“Please, say no more,” Lucas pleaded, clinging to her arm.
She snorted, reaching for Rebecca’s hand, but Catherine jumped in once again with her signature timid
look.
“I didn’t mean anything by it,” she sobbed. “I’ve been friends with the guys forever and only have their best interests at heart. This banquet is huge for the company. Rebecca’s never really done this social
scene, and…”
She flicked a deliberate glance at Rebecca’s legs. “Her mobility is limited. If she trips up, it reflects on all of us, right?”
“Business partnerships are based on strength, not looks,” Isabelle countered. “If Rossi Enterprises chooses partners like that, then you shouldn’t cooperate with them at all. They don’t deserve it.”
Rebecca glanced at Gabriel meaningfully. He nodded and silently encouraged her to play along. They had nothing else to do anyway.
When Isabelle reached for her hand again, Rebecca willingly stepped over. Gabriel followed, not gonna let her face those people alone.
“And you are?” Isabelle asked, sizing him up.
Rebecca replied, “My cousin, Gabriel Perry.”

Isabelle nodded, acknowledging that the name wasn’t on the power-player roster, but she stayed gracious. “Nice to meet you.”
“Likewise,” Gabriel replied, warm and easy.

The group then drifted toward the center of the ballroom. The earlier spat hadn’t carried because they had been tucked in a quiet corner.
Except for the few ladies at the table next to them, almost no one had heard what had just occurred. In fact, those ladies had no interest in the argument at all, their attention fully on Rebecca’s necklace.
