“What’s the point of bragging like that?” Rebecca scoffed. “If Mr. Rossi Jr. really liked her, would she even come back?”
She didn’t get it. Was it just for reputation?
“Of course, there is a point,” Gabriel said.
Being in a different field was like being in another world. Rebecca came from an arts background, so she didn’t quite grasp the business games.
“Identity is whatever you claim,” Sonia chimed in, her voice cool and precise. “If she’s bold enough to brag, someone will believe it. The half-believers will still kiss up-maybe not with big contracts, but handbags, perfume, and other small gifts work fine. Even if the deal falls through, no one’s going to ask for the trinkets back.”
Skeptical, Rebecca turned to Gabriel for clues. His faint smile confirmed it.
Isabelle looked on with disdain as the group returned with drinks. She muttered, “Shameless to the bone.”
The group stopped in front of them. Catherine raised her glass, announcing, “Rebecca, these are all Vance’s business partners. Guys, this is Vance’s wife, Rebecca.”
The partners greeted Rebecca, then glanced at her legs and started giggling.
Gabriel’s hand settled on her shoulder; he was about to step in. She tugged at his sleeve, signaling him
to stay cool.
Vance arrived just then, striding in from the entrance and scanning the room. Now it was time to drop
the mask.
He spotted them and quickly headed in their direction. Unaware, Catherine stood there radiating smug
benevolence.
“Mrs. Bradford doesn’t go out much because of her leg, so her social skills aren’t great,” she said sanctimoniously. “Tonight is huge for Vance’s company, so let’s help her settle in. She’s still learning. If she slips up anywhere, please be understanding.”
Gabriel’s voice sliced through the room. “She doesn’t need anyone to help her settle in. And no one here is qualified to offer understanding.”
Isabelle and Sonia exchanged worried glances. They understood Gabriel’s anger, but this was a high- profile occasion. Even Vance couldn’t afford to go full scorched earth here, let alone some unknown outsider. He’d end up being the one humiliated.
Isabelle jumped in, trying to smooth things over. “Catherine, we’re not with you. Take your fan club and go play somewhere else. Sonia and I will take care of her.”
Sonia took Rebecca’s other hand-a silent reassurance.

Catherine laughed mockingly. “You two? No kidding. And you…”
She pointed at Gabriel. “What are you? If not for Vance’s invitation, you couldn’t even get in. This isn’t your village meeting hall. Better to lay low and not let that dirt-poor vibe show. Security might toss you
out.”
“Toss me out?” Gabriel’s gaze passed through his lenses.
But Catherine was already carried away with smugness. She cackled, “What else? Look, this is an important night. Not just anyone can waltz in. Ever heard of class? Hanging around low-rent people is an embarrassment in front of real power. It’s a slap in Mr. Rossi Jr.’s face. You think he meets just anyone?”
