Chapter 354
“Really?” Catherine had a vague feeling it wasn’t that simple.
“Of course,” Aiden said confidently. “Besides, don’t you still have that volunteer charm? Bring that up, and Vance will forgive anything you’ve done.”
She forced a smile. That so-called charm might not be protection at all. It could turn out to be a time bomb that would explode at any moment and make things even worse.
“What’s wrong?” Aiden was puzzled by her reaction, but she couldn’t tell him the truth.
The volunteer from back then hadn’t been her at all. She had simply been playing around in the hospital room and had fallen for Vance at first sight.
The handsome boy had offered her expensive gifts as thanks, and she had accepted them to get closer
to him.
“Don’t worry,” Aiden reassured her. “We still have one final trump card.”
She stayed silent.
The next day, Vance woke up on the living room floor.
He had barely slept all night. Only near dawn had he dozed off lightly, but the alarm soon woke him. It was seven o’clock. Rebecca had asked him to meet at the courthouse at nine.
No matter what, he had to go. Things were already bad enough. He couldn’t stand her up now and make
it worse.
He went to shower and saw in the mirror that one night had left him looking utterly haggard. He was unfit to face anyone like that.
After showering, he cleaned himself up as neatly as possible. When he put on his shirt, the sapphire cufflinks on the sleeves sparkled and dazzled him.
He touched the gems on them, then headed out. He arrived at the courthouse at 8:30, but Rebecca wasn’t there yet.
He rested his hands on the steering wheel. The morning sunlight streamed through the windshield and once again caught the cufflinks.
Faintly, he thought he saw an engraving on the platinum base. He lifted his hand to look closer and found that both cufflinks had letters on them. One was with R, and one was with V-the initials of their
names.
His mind flashed back to the time when Rebecca had prepared the wedding invitations. She had bought a stack of beautiful cards and waited excitedly for him to come home so they could discuss how many

tables to book and how many invitations to send.
“No need,” he had said differently.

Thinking he was just busy, she had hugged the stack of cards and shown them to him with a bright smile. “I know you don’t have time. I’m free anyway, so I’ll do it. Look, I’ve filled in all our names this afternoon. Once we decide on the hotel, exact time, and guest list, I can fill those in.”
On every card, she had carefully written down their names. Every stroke was neat and precise, without any sloppy connection. It showed how seriously she had taken it.
“How many relatives and friends do you have on your side?” She had asked hopefully. “On my side, it is mostly high school classmates, but we have a lot of overlap. How many colleagues do you want to invite?”
She had really been looking forward to a proper wedding, but he had brushed it off. “No need. There aren’t many people. We can just call them.”
The light in her eyes had visibly dimmed. He had felt a little sorry, but he had still insisted on no big banquet-just a small ceremony with a few close friends and family.
Her family hadn’t cared as long as he paid enough
