Thinking back, Vance figured the most disappointed people had to be Rebecca and Josette.

Josette’s simple wish had been to see her granddaughter married in a beautiful, proper ceremony. The thought made a sour ache bloom in his chest.

Lately, that kind of ache had been hitting him more and more often.

Just then, a car pulled up and parked nearby. In the rearview mirror, he saw Rebecca step out with Gabriel.

He quickly got out to meet her. In the golden sunlight, they faced each other.

“Rebecca.” He quickened his steps toward her.

She nodded lightly. “You’re here. Let’s get inside.”

He had so many things he wanted to say. “I never wanted to divorce you. I said I would spend my whole life with you. I never changed my mind.”

But she had no desire to hear those words. They were meaningless and frustrating. How many times did she have to say it before he saw the truth? She was really done.

“We’re already here. Let’s not talk about that anymore. It’s pointless.” She walked firmly toward the courthouse doors, making it clear with her actions that she would not turn back.

He quickly followed her. “I’m sorry about last night. I didn’t know Catherine had sent you those messages. Why didn’t you tell me?”

She halted her steps, turning to face him.

“And if I had told you, what then?”

“I would have…”

“I told you I wanted a big wedding with lots of guests. Did you listen? I told you I wanted a child. I told you I hated it when they made fun of my leg. Did you listen? I told you I didn’t like spicy food. When did you ever remember? I told you I was Mrs. Bradford. You turned around and left with her. When the kidnappers made you choose between us, if I had asked you to choose me, would you have done so?”

His lips were pale and trembling.

“…”

I

“Let me tell you why I didn’t say anything when I received those messages. Because I didn’t want to. I only kept them as evidence for the divorce lawsuit. If nothing had happened last night or if you had refused to come today, you would have seen those messages in court.”

“Is there really no way to turn this around?” He stood still, his eyes pleading. “That photo you received wasn’t real. I was asleep. Catherine staged the whole thing to provoke you.”

“And what does that change?” She stared at him. “Does that mean the two of you never slept together?”

His face turned pale as he remembered the night he and Aiden had gotten drunk at Catherine’s place.

His expression said it all, but she sneered, “You’re disgusting.”

She continued to stride toward the doors. Her steps were unsteady and uneven. As he watched, his eyes burned with hot pain.

“Go on, Mr. Bradford,” Gabriel said coldly, standing beside him,

Gabriel had no idea Rebecca had suffered so many grievances in this marriage.

Vance knew then that this divorce was inevitable. He finally lowered his head and followed them inside.

The process was quite simple. Since both parties agreed to the divorce and had no objections to the property division, they only needed to wait out the 30-day cooling-off period before collecting the

certificate.
