The rims of Catherine’s eyes reddened. “I don’t need your thanks. I just want you to be happy.”
“Yeah, losing the deal is nothing,” Aiden echoed. “What matters is that the three of us are still together. We started from nothing. With the company at this scale now, can it really be worse than when we first began? We’ll just earn a little less.”
“That’s right. Even though you’re divorced, you still have us. We’ll always be by your side,” Catherine said, pressing his lips together.
Aiden winked at her urgently, but she didn’t catch the hint.
“Yeah, I know that.” Vance rubbed his temples. “I’m just a little tired. I need some time alone.”
“Are you driving us away?” Aiden sulked.
Vance shook his head. “No. I just haven’t sorted some things out yet. I need to calm down and think clearly.”
“About the property division?” Aiden pressed.
Vance nodded, not feeling like explaining anymore. Whatever Aiden wanted to think was fine.
“Your family…” Aiden sighed. “They won’t treat her badly. Alright then, we’ll leave you alone. Take a few days to recover. If you feel bad, just call us. No matter what, we’re friends forever!”
“Yeah.” Vance stood up and saw them out, not turning back until they entered the elevator.
As he closed the door, an idea struck him. He operated on the lock to change the passcode.
Then he shut the door and locked himself inside. The box of paper cranes sat on the coffee table. For some reason, the small transparent box no longer brought him the warmth from his youth.
Instead, it felt like a brick pressing on his chest-so heavy he could barely breathe.
Catherine still looked deeply troubled. Once they were in the car, she muttered, “Don’t you think Vance has become cold lately?”
The paper cranes were her trump card, but he hadn’t reacted much.
“He just got divorced. It’s normal for him to feel bad,” Aiden mused. “As I said, even raising a pet for five years creates attachment. Plus, Rebecca is taking at least half of his assets. His mind must be chaotic right now. Give him a few days to calm down. He’ll be fine.”
She shook her head. “It’s not just today. I can feel the difference. I think we might have used the wrong approach.”
“What do you mean?”
“My sixth sense tells me this. It all started from the night we slept in the same bed.”
“Really? I feel nothing.”

“You’re not me. Anyway, I think ever since that night, he’s been much colder and more distant. The most obvious change is that he hangs out with us less often. Didn’t you notice?”
“It’s not a big deal. Just trust me and give it more time. He will marry you. Now that the divorce is finalized, the last obstacle is gone.”
Once they arrived at her place, Aiden stayed instead of going to the company.
“With my face looking like this, I can’t go anywhere,” he said. “You’re no better. Might as well recover together.”
