With both Vance and Aiden absent, Lucas had to manage the company operations alone.
Three days later, he couldn’t take it anymore. He called again, urging them to come.
It was the start of a new week. The stock had hit the limit down again at opening, and the company was going down.
The mention of stocks inspired Vance, and he immediately called Rebecca.
The line went through, but her voice was cold and distant. “What is it?”
“Rebecca…” His throat tightened so much he could barely speak.
In the past, whenever he called her, her voice had always carried such joy that he could imagine her
smile.
“Speak,” she urged him.
“L…” he said hoarsely, “I’m at home. It feels strange. The house feels so empty.”
“Oh.” Her voice grew even colder. “You can just invite all your friends over for a party. Celebrate your freedom from all the pain.”
“No, I don’t. I won’t.”
“Why not? Gabriel is throwing a party for me tonight. You should do the same.”
He smiled, but it was bitter. “Rebecca…”
“If you have something to say, say it. If not, I’m hanging up. I’m busy.”
!
“Wait, don’t hang up,” he said quickly. “Didn’t you want the shares converted to cash? We need to set a time to handle the paperwork. You have to transfer the shares you currently hold back to me. Otherwise, it’ll be hard to explain to the shareholders.”
“Okay.”
“So, when would you like to…”
“Whenever you want. Just let me know when you schedule the board meeting. I’ll go through the process then.”
“O-kay, I’ll call the meeting right now,” he stammered. “It will start in one hour, Wait for…”
“Fine,” she cut in, then ended the call,
He listened to the busy tone, swallowing the rest of his words. He was going to say he would go pick her

Board meeting in one hour.”
Lucas was thrilled to hear him finally sounding alive again. “Sure, right away.”
Vance changed his clothes, cleaned himself up, and drove straight to the company.
Aiden was also notified. “What’s so urgent that it has to be held right now?”
He agreed despite his reluctance. Just before heading there, he needed to go home to change his
clothes.
He had some at Catherine’s place, but he had already worn them for two days. The others were too casual for meetings. 1
When he got home, the house was unusually quiet.
“Sonia?” he called out, but there was no response.
He guessed she was at the hospital.
“Shane?” he called out again.
Still no response. He wondered if the nanny had taken his son out to play.
The nanny came out and greeted him. “Sir.”
“Where’s Sonia?” he asked casually.
“Mrs. Hodge, she…”
“What’s wrong?”
“She left.”
“Left? Where did she go?” Aiden frowned.
“She said she was going back to her hometown.”
“Back to her hometown? Is her mom better?”
“She didn’t specify.”
“What about my son?” 1
“She took him with her.”
