Chapter 389

“Grandma!” Vance moved fast.
He reached out and deflected the iron piece, sending it clattering to the floor. The sharp spikes on the piece pierced his arm, drawing blood.
Rebecca helped Josette up. After checking multiple times to make sure Josette was unharmed, she turned to look at Vance’s bleeding arm and the sharp iron teeth on the fallen piece.
She couldn’t imagine what would have happened if it had struck Josette’s head.
The shop assistant was terrified and kept apologizing to Rebecca. “I’m sorry. I didn’t do it on purpose. Did the lady get a fright? I…”

She was just an employee who couldn’t afford the consequences. When she saw the blood on Vance’s arm, she became even more flustered. “I’m sorry. I’ll cover the medical expenses.”
The decorative piece had fallen because of her, but she had been pushed by Catherine. With her modest salary, she couldn’t afford it if the customers demanded an exorbitant price.
Vance shielded Catherine behind him and told the assistant, “You don’t need to pay the medical expenses. It’s just a small injury. As for the elderly lady…”
He looked at Josette and Rebecca. “Grandma, let me take you to the hospital for a check-up. I’ll cover the
costs and compensation for the fright.”
“Shut up!” Rebecca snapped, hatred flashing in her eyes. “Do you think we’re short on money?”
Vance paused, feeling the irony. With Gabriel around, money was the least of their concerns.
The shop owner arrived, visibly shaken. “Perhaps we should call the police?”
She had heard what happened and didn’t want her shop to take the blame. It was the customer trying on the wedding gown who had caused the incident.
Even if they said the shop wasn’t responsible now, who knew if they would change their minds later? The police had to be called.
Catherine clutched Vance’s clothes, panic written all over her face. At this point, whether or not to call
the police was no longer the main issue.
Catherine had only wanted to injure Josette, knocking her unconscious if possible and silencing her for
a while.
Then Catherine could figure out a way to silence her permanently later. She had never expected Vance to interfere.
Vance assumed she was just nervous, and he was worried that Rebecca wouldn’t let it go. This was already the second time the two women had been involved in something that might require the police.

Last time, getting Rebecca to drop the case had taken considerable effort. This time, he had seen the whole thing clearly.
Although the decorative piece had been knocked down by Josette, the real cause was Catherine pushing
the assistant.
He pleaded, “I’ll take full responsibility for today’s incident. Catherine is…”
He couldn’t bring himself to say the word “pregnant”. After a moment of hesitation, he continued, “It was an accident. Name your price. I’ll agree to anything.”
Rebecca wasn’t surprised at all. Whenever a choice had to be made between them, he always chose Catherine. That was an unchanging rule.
She smiled, but it was chilling. “So, my husband is willing to go to any lengths to protect his mistress and illegitimate child.”
Earlier, when she and Vance had been talking about the contract and the wedding, their voices had been low, so only a few people had heard. But now, she spoke loudly without any restraint.
Everyone in the shop was stunned. Sharp glances shot toward Vance and Catherine as murmurs quickly filled the air.
“What? A mistress and her illegitimate child?”
“My goodness! Mistresses so bold nowadays? Coming to buy a wedding gown?”
“And she kept insisting on white. No wonder she was so obsessed!”
“What bad luck! How did we end up with this kind of customer?”
“When I was helping her try on the dress, I heard everything. I’ve never seen such shameless people.”
