Chapter 399
Finally, seeing the shadow of the boy in Vance, Andrew opened the gate.
For a moment, neither of them knew what to say.
At last, Andrew stepped aside and said, “Come on in. Sit for a while.”
On the way into the house, Vance learned that Darren’s parents had only returned from abroad the day before and planned to spend their remaining years there.
Inside, he saw Darren’s mother, Jocelyn Horton, sorting through things. It took her a while to recognize him.
She invited him to sit, and they chatted about everyday things. Slowly, the atmosphere warmed up.
“It’s been so many years, but it still feels like yesterday,” Jocelyn sighed. “Every time I think about it, my heart aches.”
Vance’s throat tightened. He didn’t know what words could comfort her.
She wiped her tears and forced a smile. “Thank you for still remembering Darren and coming to see us.”
He felt embarrassed because he hadn’t brought any gifts. He hadn’t expected anyone to be still there.
“I’ll come often, if it doesn’t bother you,” he said.
The last time he had seen Darren, they had fought. In their youthful arrogance, they had said harsh words about ending their friendship. He never imagined it would be a permanent farewell.
“Not at all,” she said. “But young people are busy with their careers. We don’t want to trouble you.”
He smiled bitterly. There was no trouble to speak of. These days, he was practically homeless.
Later, Jocelyn brought out Darren’s belongings in a rosewood box. There weren’t many items.
“These were the things he carried with him. We burned his clothes and kept only these,” she said tearfully.
They were a notebook filled with travel diaries, a pen, a watch, a Swiss army knife, a lighter, a pair of sunglasses, some documents, and a few outdoor survival tools.
But Vance’s gaze was drawn to a small stone. His voice trembled slightly. “Can I look at this?”
“This stone?” She took it out. “He always carried it with him. I teased him once, asking if a girl had given it to him.”
Lost in memory, she smiled, then started crying again.
Vance recognized it-a colorful, beautiful stone with a circle carved on it and several osmanthus flowers
inside the circle.

The person who carved it had said the circle represented the moon and wished the recipient a fulfilling and blossoming life.
Vance held the stone, his eyes stinging with pain. This stone had originally been meant for him.
“Did he ever get married?” he asked, his voice hoarse.
Jocelyn shook her head. “No. He didn’t even have a girlfriend.”
She took out the travel diary and opened one page. “Here. He probably liked someone, though-a dancer. He never got the chance to pursue her. Still, I’m grateful to her. At least in his short life, he got to taste love.”
It read: [Through the moon covered in blooming flowers, I vaguely see your face.]
[It’s Halloween, and I’m traveling through the wilderness of Europe, staying in a simple inn with a terrible signal. Yet on the international channel, I see you dancing in a show. I’m overjoyed.]
[How are you? I miss you very much. But I don’t dare tell you.]
With a plop, a tear fell onto the notebook.
