It blurred the words into a smear of ink.

Vance quickly closed the notebook and handed it back to Jocelyn, afraid more words would be ruined by his tears. “I’m sorry…”

Jocelyn put the notebook back in the box and smiled bitterly. “It’s alright. These past few years, I’ve flipped through this notebook so many times it’s almost falling apart. I don’t even know how many tears I’ve dropped on it myself.”

Vance still held the stone in his hand, turning it over carefully. He remembered it had once been rough. Now it was smooth and rounded from years of being rubbed between fingers.

“Do you recognize this stone?” Jocelyn asked.

He nodded. “Yes, it was carved by one of our high school classmates. During an autumn outing, we picked up this stone by the river. Someone carved patterns on it, drilled a hole, and made it into a pendant. I didn’t know who had it in the end. Turns out, it was Darren.”

“He treasured it very much,” Jocelyn said. “Since it’s something from your classmate, you should take it.”

Vance was surprised. “Can I?”

“Yes.” She nodded. “We hope that besides us, someone else in this world will remember him.”

“Okay.” His hand trembled slightly.

Just then, a voice came from the doorway. “Mrs. Horton.”

Vance recognized it instantly, and his grip on the stone tightened.

Darren’s parents vaguely remembered a girl among Darren’s classmates, but their impression of her wasn’t as deep as that of Vance.

After all, the boys usually hung out together playing ball.

They quickly invited Rebecca inside. “Come on in. We’re happy to have you.”

She had brought some nutritional supplements and placed them on the table, then sat down beside Jocelyn.

The conversation continued. The two elders loved hearing stories about Darren’s high school days. Listening to memories of his youth made them sad, but the reminiscing also brought a touch of warmth.

Considering their feelings, she didn’t clash with Vance.

Time seemed to flow backward to those carefree days with summer cicadas. It wasn’t until the moon rose high in the sky that Rebecca and Vance finally said goodbye.

Vance had even gone into the kitchen and cooked for them. The two elders felt sorry because they had

just returned and hadn’t properly arranged the house or prepared any food.

But they promised to treat the two to a good meal next time. Vance agreed happily; that was the best meal he had eaten in a long time.

Two cars were parked outside. One was Vance’s, and the other was waiting for Rebecca.

She halted her steps and turned to look at Vance. The rims of his eyes were still red.

He murmured, “Rebecca…

She held out her hand. “Give it to me.”

He froze. “What?”

“The stone.”

“Can’t I keep it?”

“No. You don’t deserve it.”

He smiled bitterly and finally placed the stone in her hand. The moment she gripped it and turned away, he asked hoarsely, “Why didn’t you end up with Darren?”

She ignored the question and got into the car, which cut through the wind and sped off.
