Five Years of Marriage to Mr. Bradford (by Koi Fish) novel Chapter 401

Chapter 401

The month passed in the blink of an eye.

Less than a week after they crossed paths at the Horton family’s house, the 30-day cooling-off period came to an end. The day before the appointment, Vance received a call from Gabriel’s lawyer, reminding him not to miss the next day’s visit to the courthouse.

He had originally intended to make the divorce as difficult as possible. Even though he knew the outcome was inevitable, he had planned to drag things out through filing for litigation or feigning second thoughts-anything else to prolong the process and see Rebecca a few more times.

But now, he no longer had the nerve to do any of that.

At 9 a.m., he arrived punctually at the entrance of the courthouse, only to find that Rebecca had already come ahead of him. She was accompanied by the lawyer and Gabriel.

He had once felt deep resentment toward Gabriel, but at this point, that bitterness suddenly lifted. It was a good thing after all, with Gabriel truly caring for and protecting her.

Rebecca had arrived early and waited inside the car. At nine sharp, she saw Vance’s car pull up right on time.

He had gotten a fresh haircut and looked neatly put together. He was wearing the custom shirt she had once ordered for him through Derek. As he closed the car door, the cufflinks at his wrists caught the morning light and flashed with a cool blue gleam.

He had lost a dramatic amount of weight; the tailored shirt now hung loosely on his frame. Yet the defeated slump and near-mad fury from recent days had been gone.

He appeared calm, with only a faint melancholy in his eyes, looking almost like the boy she remembered from high school. It was a shame that time could never turn backward. Everything that had happened between them had left only scars.

He walked straight up to her and offered a small, quiet smile. “Rebecca.”

“Let’s get this over with,” she said, ignoring the smile.

There was nothing left worth saying.

Vance glanced at Gabriel and greeted him. The latter just brushed it off. “It’s fine. Do away with the pleasantries.”

Vance didn’t argue. He just quietly followed behind them.

The divorce proceeded without any complications. The only real change was Vance’s attitude toward the assets. He kept only a five-figure sum for himself and signed everything else over to Rebecca.

All the properties he had purchased during marriage-most already registered in her name-went to her with no additional paperwork required.

She didn’t object. Since he was showing such sincerity, she decided not to pursue the house he had bought for Catherine through Aiden.

“Consider it me leaving you a roof over your head,” she said with sarcasm. “You and Catherine can move in once you’re married. Double congratulations.”

He gave a bitter laugh. “Come on. There’s no happiness here.”

“Marriage is one happy event,” she replied coolly. “And the other… becoming a dad.”

Vance pretended not to hear the jab. He drew a deep breath, his eyes filling with raw reluctance and

tenderness. “Rebecca…”

He wanted to say a proper goodbye, but the words caught in his throat. In the end, he forced a smile and swallowed the ache deep inside.

“This is the end. We won’t see each other again,” she concluded, turning toward the car under Gabriel’s protective watch.

He watched, feeling as if someone had carved a hole straight through his chest. He couldn’t stop himself from shouting, “Rebecca!”

She paused, and he stared at her back, condensing every ounce of longing and pain into short sentences. “If you ever need anything in the future, come to me. I’ll do everything in my power to help. I’ll always be here.”
