Rebecca stared at the bank alert on her phone, but she didn’t even bother counting the zeros anymore. Twelve years of love and five years of marriage had been exchanged for this long string of numbers.
She had no idea what she would do differently if she could go back in time, but there were no do-overs in life. She could only keep moving forward.
As she held her phone, Gabriel came down the stairs. “Vance is outside. Says he has some things to give you. Want to see him, or should I handle it?”
She blinked, wondering how he had found out.
“You blocked him, remember?” Gabriel explained. “He called the lawyer, who then informed me.”
“You go,” she said.
“Alright.” He nodded and stepped outside.
Vance sat in his car, nervously watching the path Rebecca would have to take. Instead, Gabriel walked
out.
He gave a bitter smile, realizing she didn’t want to see him after all. He had expected as much. He got out and greeted Gabriel, who waved dismissively. “No need for pleasantries. Just get to the point.”
Vance accepted the cold tone without complaint. He lifted the heavy suitcase from the trunk and handed it over. “I cleared out the house. It’s empty now, so Rebecca can list it for sale whenever she wants. All
the deeds are inside. She can handle them however she likes.”
“Okay,” Gabriel replied evenly, turning to head back.
Vance quickly added, “Oh, and tell her I changed the door code. It’s 123456 now.”
The ridiculously simple password made Gabriel’s eyebrows twitch, but he only nodded again.
Vance stopped him one last time. “Gabe…”
“Call me Rossi or Perry,”
“Gabriel…”
“Say everything you have to say at once.”
Vance stood there, words failing him. He didn’t actually have anything important to say; he simply didn’t want the moment to end.
Even though he was not facing Rebecca, it was at least someone tied to her.
“I’ll go now. If anything comes up, I’m only a phone call away,” he finally said, eyes full of longing.
“We won’t be needing that,” Gabriel replied, heading back into the house.

Vance’s shoulders slumped as he felt the deep solitude.
Back inside, Gabriel set the suitcase in front of Rebecca. “He brought this. Deeds are inside, the new
code is 123456, and the house is ready to sell.”
She opened it right there. The flash of gold nearly blinded them-half the suitcase was stacked with gold bars, the rest with property deeds.
“At least, he’s not stingy,” Gabriel whistled. “Then again, he’d better not be. If he had tried to short-change you, I would’ve ended him faster.”
Rebecca flipped through the deeds. She had forgotten where half the properties even were, planning to keep three and sell the rest. She would have Gabriel drive her past all of them later.
Suddenly, something slipped out from between the papers and fell to the floor.
