Chapter 407
Rebecca picked it up, realizing it was a paper crane.
Her heart gave a small, painful lurch as old memories stirred. “Has he figured it out?”
This crane wasn’t made from the same paper she had used back then. It looked brand new.
She carefully unfolded it. Inside was a note in Vance’s familiar handwriting: [Becky, may you always be happy and safe.]
It seemed he had learned about the pa
cranes and the volunteer work she had done for his grandmother. But what did it matter now? They didn’t have any relationships anymore.
She had been long done with him. If she had received this note at any point in the past 12 years, she would have been overjoyed.
Now it was far too late. Belated affection meant nothing, and besides, she wasn’t even sure if this counted as affection, but it was certainly cheap.
She dropped the crane into the trash and closed the suitcase lid. Gabriel laughed behind her, causing her to spin around and glare.
He spread his hands, grinning. “Everyone says I only care about money. Guess it runs in our blood.”
She burst out laughing.
“Well done,” he praised. “Come on, let’s get Grandma and go grab a big dinner. Then I’ll take you to the therapy session.”
The thought of a proper meal made her agree instantly. “Sounds like a plan!”
After leaving the villa, Vance drove straight back to the office.
Lucas was waiting and following him into the CEO’s office. “What’s going on? Where have you been?”
Vance shut the door, and Lucas pressed, “What on earth have you been busy with? So secretive. Where did you come from just now?”
He noticed the sweat on Vance’s forehead and poured him a glass of ice water.
“From Gabriel’s place,” Vance replied, downing the water.
Lucas’s eyes lit up. “No way! You patched things up with him? Is the deal back on? Tell me how you pulled it off,”
Vance was speechless. “You’re reading way too much into this.”
Before they could continue, someone pounded on the door. Vance had deliberately locked it, just to prevent others from barging in.

“It must be Aiden,” Lucas said, heading to open it. “He’s having a rough day.”
It was indeed Aiden, and Catherine was right behind him.
“Vance, where have you been?” Catherine asked, holding takeouts. “Aiden and I went by your place, but the code had changed. What’s going on?”
Vance stayed silent, and she whined, “Tell us. Are we your friends or not?”
He brushed it off. “The house belongs to Rebecca now. She’s handling everything and probably selling it.”
“Then… Where are you staying?” she asked hopefully.
“Hotel for now,” he replied casually, turning to Aiden.
Catherine’s eyes grew teary again. “Vance…”
Lucas cut in, “Aiden ran into some real trouble today.”
“Oh?” Vance raised an eyebrow. “What happened?”
Aiden waved dismissively. “Nothing major. Just received a court summons. That’s all.”
“What for?” Vance pressed.
