“That’s not true. Don’t talk about Izzy like that,” Lucas said quickly, not feeling the slightest bit embarrassed. “I asked her to manage the money. I’m terrible at it. She’s been handling it since we started dating. How is that embarrassing? Izzy says taking care of the family is a good quality. Sometimes, I do want to stay out longer with the guys, but when she reminds me to come home, it’s because she wants to spend time with me.”
He paused and added, “I’m busy with work all day and don’t have much time for her. Staying out after work makes it even less. Her reminding me is completely normal. I may complain sometimes, but Izzy isn’t wrong. When I’m out having fun, I actually feel uneasy and keep thinking about her. As for legitimate expenses like paying for client dinners, even if she gets the notification, she won’t complain. Says she has the right to know because she loves me. If a woman doesn’t care at all about what her man does, that means she doesn’t love him anymore.”
Catherine stared at him with contempt. “Are you stupid? She’s brainwashed you.”
“To be honest, I used to think that way too,” Lucas sighed. “I thought she was too strict and I had too little freedom. But now, looking at Vance and Aiden, I believe she is right. I don’t know the full story with Vance and Rebecca, but I saw what happened with Aiden and Sonia. In the first couple of years, Sonia used to argue and cry all the time. Later, she just went quiet.”
He paused. “And Rebecca… I only got to know her better this year. No matter what Vance did or how late he came home, she stayed indifferent. That’s what not loving someone looks like. In the end, both couples got divorced. When Isabelle and I got married, she set one rule: the wife is always right. I used to see it as a joke, but now I think it’s the truth.” 2
He rambled on and on, his eyes full of tenderness. Catherine felt a sour twist in her chest. 1
Out of the three men, Lucas was the dumbest and most useless one. Without Vance’s help, he never would have gotten anywhere. Yet he treated his wife the best.
Catherine didn’t get it. Why did that shrew get such a sincere man?
“Fine. I can’t argue with you,” she sniffed. “I’ll find a hotel to stay in.” 1
“Alright, I’ll drive you there,” he offered,
At least, Sonia hadn’t been completely ruthless. Catherine was left with some money. Otherwise, she’d find it hard to survive.
She booked the nearest hotel and checked in at the lobby. 1
Lucas handed her the suitcase. “Go up and get some rest. I’m heading home.”
“Lucas…” She placed her hand on the back of his. “Don’t go back, okay? I-I’m scared to be alone.”
He flinched, repeatedly shaking his head. “I already broke the rules by not going back with Sonia. If I stay any longer, Izzy will kill me.”

Hatred burned in Catherine’s chest. She forced it down and gave him the puppy-dog’s eyes. “What am I going to do from now on? I don’t have much money left. I won’t last many days.” 1
He stroked his chin. “Why don’t you look for a job?” 1
Her brow furrowed, and he quickly added, “Or… Maybe go find Vance?” 2
