“Maybe you’re overthinking it,” Catherine said. “Vance has always valued our friendship. He used to say we were the closest thing he had to family. How could he suspect you?”
“You said ‘used to’ yourself,” Aiden said. “You’re useless. Turn on the video. Point the camera at his phone so I can check.”
She cursed him under her breath but opened the video call anyway. She searched every app and folder for anything related to Aiden. There was nothing.
She went through his email several times-even some of his business correspondence. Still, nothing was connected to Aiden.
“That’s impossible. Doesn’t he suspect anything at all?” Aiden muttered to himself, then remembered something. “Check if he has another account logged in!”
She followed his instructions and found a secondary account.
“That’s it! Switch to it!”
“It won’t let me. There’s a secondary”
“That’s suspicious enough!” he exclaimed excitedly. “Try guessing the password.”
So, they started another round of password guessing. Nothing worked-not Rebecca’s birthday, not combinations of their birthdays, nothing.
Her head pounded. “It’s not working! The password is a mix of numbers, letters, and symbols. We could try forever and never get it.”
“Wait, let me think. Try this!”
He gave her a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols. It worked!
“What kind of magic combination was that?”
“His old gaming account password from college. Stop talking and keep looking!”
Catherine discovered an email from a week ago, titled: [Regarding some matters concerning Mr. Hodge.]
“Open it!” Aiden said urgently.
Clicking on it revealed a long list of attachments. She opened the preview and froze.
They were all evidence of how Aiden had set up shell companies, committed embezzlement, and siphoned off huge amounts of company funds.
There was also a note: [These are only the tip of the iceberg, but they might serve as a warning so you can dig deeper.]

“You… You took so much money?” Catherine exclaimed. “Are you richer than Vance now?”
“You idiot! All you care about is money!” Aiden cursed, ending the video call.

He was on hot bricks. It didn’t matter who had sent the email. What mattered was that Vance had got evidence. That explained why he had refused to settle the payments with those outsourcing companies.
The video call cut off right as Vance walked back into the room. Catherine still had his phone in her hand, and the email page was still open.
She quickly locked the screen. He didn’t speak, just looked at her.
She forced a smile. “The server found your phone and gave it to me. I was just checking to make sure it was really yours.”
“Give it to me,” he said, holding out his hand.
“W-What?”
“My phone.”
“Uh… It’s nothing.”
Her smile faltered, and her facial muscles were twitching.
“That is my phone. What do you mean by nothing?”
She refused to let go at first, but her strength couldn’t compare to his. When she couldn’t hold on, she quickly clutched her belly.
“Ow, my belly hurts…”
