But Vance acted as if he hadn’t heard her cries. He calmly unlocked his phone and saw that it was still open to the email page-even the attachment preview was visible.
“It’s our baby… It really hurts…” Catherine groaned, hoping to distract him from realizing she had been snooping through his phone.
He remained unmoved and watched her coldly. She braced herself against the table and struggled to stand up. “If you don’t care about our baby anymore, I’ll go to the hospital by myself. It hurts so much…”
She used the classic push-and-pull tactic. Vance simply sat down and watched her performance.
She lingered instead of leaving, waiting for him to comfort her. But all she got was one cold sentence.
“Aren’t you going? I thought Aiden was waiting for you.”
“W-What are you talking about?”
“Do I have to spell it out for you?”
“You mean looking into your phone? Aiden asked me to do it. I’m sorry. You’re not going to get mad over something so small, right?”
He interrupted her dramatic performance.
“I was talking about your ache. Shouldn’t you call the baby’s father to take you to the hospital?”
Her mind went blank, and her eyes bulged with shock.
“A-Aren’t you the father?”
“Am I? Should we do a paternity test?”
She choked up, feeling as though someone had grabbed her by the throat. After a long silence, she stammered, “It was Aiden! He is evil! He raped me…”
She started crying. “It happened that night when the three of us were drinking. You got drunk and passed out. That bastard raped me. I was so angry. I wanted to call the police, but he came up with a plan. If he made you think something had happened between us, you would divorce Rebecca. Later, when I got pregnant, he told me to marry you. That way, everything you owned would become ours.”
She kept talking while observing his expression. When he remained unmoved, she started wailing. “I’m telling the truth. You gotta believe me. I love you so much. How could I ever lie to you? It was all Aiden forcing me.”
“He forced you? You never wanted to lie to me?” Vance repeated her words and found them almost laughable.
Brotherly loyalty? Pure love? He had believed all those carefully woven lies. How stupid could he be!

“Yes, I’ve always been sincere toward you. I never wanted to deceive you.”
“Then how do you explain the volunteer work and the paper cranes?”
Her crying stopped abruptly, as if someone had grabbed her by the neck. 2
