Desmond raised the tongs threateningly at his sister.
“Alright, let me try this local specialty,” Rebecca said.
She had to admit that their family atmosphere was genuinely warm and comfortable. As for Desmond’s so-called specialty… Well, fried fish and chips just tasted like they were supposed to.
No matter who made it, it would taste the same.
“How is it?” he asked expectantly.
She nodded. “It’s good.”
He smiled with pride. “I also baked a dessert-an apple pie. After dinner, we can sit in the yard and share it.”
She blinked. “Apple pie?”
“Yeah!” He popped a large fry into his mouth.
Her eyes narrowed. “You didn’t steal apples from my garden, did you?”
He paused, then laughed sheepishly. “How can you call it stealing when the chef does it? I just picked them.”
She laughed along. The atmosphere at the dinner table grew light and relaxed.
After dinner, Desmond brought out the apple pie he had baked along with the cake Rebecca had brought. He set everything up outdoors, turned on the garden lights, and made drinks.
The three of them sat in the yard, chatting and eating. From time to time, the siblings bickered. They stayed out until ten o’clock before Rebecca finally went back to her house next door.
When she finished washing up and lay down on the bed, she was still thinking about the night. Knowing that Desmond and Denise lived right next door gave her an unexpected sense of security.
Just as she was about to sleep, she received a friend request from Vance. The note read: [I need to ask about Aiden’s case. Please accept.]
They were thousands of miles apart now, but he was still restless. But precisely because of the distance, she didn’t have to worry about further entanglement.
She accepted the request, curious about how the four people had handled the mess. Hearing it from outsiders was never as satisfying as getting the story firsthand.
Vance asked for the download password for the email attachments that her people had accessed on his phone the other night.
Rebecca: [What do you need that for?]
Vance: [To gather more evidence against them.]
She hesitated, debating whether to tell him that those files only had the titles and no actual data.
Vance waited for a while, then typed: [What’s wrong? Inconvenient?]
Rebecca: [Not really. Isn’t the evidence the police collected enough? It’s undeniable he incited Catherine to poison you.]

Vance was silent for a long time, the status showing him typing, probably stung by her words.
Vance: [Rebecca…]
It seemed like he was silently begging her not to continue.
Rebecca: [It’s in your own recording. She said it herself. Her contact on your phone is saved as Cathy Babe.]
The status showed him tying again.
Vance: [Stop making fun of me.]
