Vance sat there in stunned silence, having not said a single word the entire time.
The lawyer was speechless. Wasn’t Lucas supposed to be the easier one to talk to?
“By the way, how qualified are you as a lawyer? Didn’t you read her case file before taking her on?” Lucas said, twisting the knife even deeper. “She tried to poison Mr. Bradford. Do you think he’s stupid enough to vouch for her now?”
Vance paused at his blunt words.
The lawyer pushed up his glasses. “Of course, I reviewed the file. But Miss Welch insisted that Mr. Bradford didn’t blame her and that it was never her intention to harm him. She said she is the person he loves most, and no matter what she’s done, he’ll always forgive and save her.”
He cleared his throat and looked at Lucas. “She also mentioned that you are the soft-hearted one who always protects her.”
“Bullshit!” Lucas exploded. “He’s an idiot, not me!”
Vance was speechless.
“Let me make this very clear,” Lucas continued. “If we stay out of this case, fine. But if we get involved, we’ll be the ones hoping she rots in prison!”
He chased the lawyer out, slammed the door shut, and turned to Vance with a serious expression. “I just got rid of him. If he comes back, don’t you dare go soft again.”
The lawyer’s words about forgiving and saving Catherine made him uneasy. He knew Vance wouldn’t take Catherine back, but he wasn’t sure whether Vance would go soft and help her one last time.
The lawyer left the building in a daze. This was nothing like what Catherine had described.
He even began to worry that the next person he had to meet would react the same way. But he had no choice. He had to try.
When Sonia received the lawyer’s call, she was on the plantation learning how to roast tea leaves. She had set up a stove in the courtyard with a pot and was stir-frying a small batch.
Isabelle sat beside her, occasionally offering tips.
When Sonia glanced at her, Isabelle waved her off with a laugh. “What? Don’t you trust me? I’ve been roasting tea for 20 years. I started helping my grandfather when I was this tiny.”
“Who would dare doubt you? You’re good at everything,” Sonia quipped, having always admired how freely and boldly Isabelle lived her life.
Isabelle shook her head. “Actually, I’m pretty lazy. Just want to eat, sleep, and do nothing.”
Sonia’s phone rang. It was the lawyer, who wanted to meet about Aiden’s case.

“You can just tell me over the phone,” she said. “Aiden and I are already divorced. Whatever happens to him has nothing to do with me anymore.”
She already had a rough idea of what Aiden had done. Betraying his friends, getting arrested, and probably heading to prison.
The lawyer felt truly unlucky. None of these people was cooperative.
“Ma’am, here’s the situation,” he explained. “Mr. Hodge has been detained. I’m the lawyer he hired, and I’ll do everything I can to protect his legal rights.”
“Oh, I see,” she replied coolly, having no desire to get involved in anything related to Aiden.
The lawyer felt the conversation dying again. He gathered his thoughts. “Would it be possible for us to meet in person? The retainer contract needs a family member’s signature.”
“Go talk to his parents,” she simply suggested.
The lawyer was speechless, having already tried that two days ago.
But his parents had been uncooperative, claiming that they didn’t need a lawyer and that they trusted the law and the government.
Since their son had broken the law, they would let the state deal with him.
