Chapter 458
Rebecca ignored Vance.
Desmond quickly got into the car and drove off, the tires kicking up slush and spraying snowmelt everywhere.
Vance stood in the snow, looking down at the stain on his clothes, but he didn’t bother brushing it off. He simply lifted his head and watched the car disappear into the distance.
A voice echoed in his mind. “She’s with him now. She’s really with him. They came out of the same house this morning. Are they living together? They…”
A strong wave of bitterness surged in his chest. They were married for five years, yet he had never truly touched her. 2
Desmond remained tense until they arrived at the clinic. Then his expression turned timid, as if he had done something wrong.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“I don’t like him coming to find you, and I didn’t want you to talk to him. So, I drove off without giving you a chance to speak.”
“It’s fine. I didn’t want to talk to him anyway.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. If I still had any feelings left, I wouldn’t have divorced him.”
“Alright, let’s go do your rehab!”
He perked up, jumped out of the car, and opened the door for her.
The path to the clinic had already been cleared of snow and sprinkled with salt so it wouldn’t ice over. He held her arm and helped her inside step by step.
Because of the heavy snow, there were fewer patients than usual.
Even Robert hadn’t come. He usually came no matter the weather. Even if he weren’t getting treatment, he would still come and chat for an hour.
Rebecca’s heart skipped a beat. In a clinic like this, the thing everyone feared most was when a regular patient suddenly stopped showing up.
“Rebecca, you’re here. Come on in,” Archer called her for therapy. “It’s quiet today.”
“Didn’t Robert come?” she asked.

“No, not today.” Archer didn’t say much.
Probably, no one wanted to voice the worst possibility.
The therapy and rehabilitation took up most of the morning again. When she finished, the elderly woman had arrived, but Robert still hadn’t shown up.
The elderly woman mumbled, “He must be slacking off. It’s cold, so he doesn’t come. Lazy old man!”
Everyone fell silent, hoping that was really the case.
Desmond had been waiting outside. When she came out, he hurried over to support her and asked quietly, “Do you know where Robert lives?”
She shook her head.
They were just clinic friends meeting because of their illnesses. The clinic was all they shared; everything else remained private.
“Let’s go home,” she said.
“Okay.” Desmond helped her into the car and rode her back.
When she got out, she noticed there was now a snowman in her yard, too. As she got closer, she saw a
card tucked into its chest.
It read: [To the person I love: happy snow day.] 1
She took the card and threw it into the trash. Then she said to Desmond, “Go inside and heat a bucket of
water.” 1
“Huh?” He blinked.
“Pour it on the snowman,” she explained, pointing at the one in her yard.
He perked up, more than happy to comply. Not to mention one bucket of water, he could do ten.
Vance hadn’t left.
