Chapter 465

Rebecca had brought gifts too-one for everyone at the clinic.

After she went in for her therapy session, Robert called out a loud goodbye. In his bright red suit and carrying an empty red sack, he headed out, wishing Desmond a Merry Christmas on his way.

Rebecca felt like something was missing. The gentleman who always came with Robert wasn’t there-probably taking the holiday off.

Outside the clinic, the usual row of cars was mostly gone because of Christmas, but a few still lined the curb.

Robert climbed into the passenger seat of one of them. The driver sat stone-faced, staring straight ahead. When Robert got in, the man didn’t even react.

“I saw her arrive with her boyfriend,” Robert chuckled. “Good-looking kid-seems really nice and incredibly attentive. You’ve got no chance, son.”

The driver’s face flushed red with anger.

Robert laughed. “Mad? That won’t change anything.”

The man kept his jaw tight. “Are you enjoying this?”

“What’s there to enjoy?” Robert said with a grin. “As my son, what have you done to make me proud?”

“As a father, what have you ever done?” the man shot back.

“Oh, I’ve done plenty,” Robert replied, still smiling. “I passed my genes on to you. The way you used to curse me? Now you can curse yourself.”

The man froze.

“Son!” Robert sighed. “You walked on the same path as I did. You became another me.”

The man’s hands tightened on the wheel until the veins stood out.

“Don’t hate so hard,” Robert continued. “You inherited my genes, and I’m not thrilled about that. At least, I don’t want you to end up the same way I did.”

“That won’t happen!” the man growled. “I will never become you! I’ll be better than you!”

That had been his vow since childhood. He’d never be like his father.

“Really?” Robert gave a tired smile. “I hope so. Every father wants his son to be better. Especially true for me. I’ve been through a lot of ups and downs. Loneliness and pain have been my constant companions. My biggest wish is that my son doesn’t follow in my footsteps.”

The man gave a cold laugh. “Belated fatherly love? Sorry, but in every school form, I filled in ‘Deceased’ under Father.”

Robert gave a bitter smile. “See? You still haven’t forgiven me, and you probably never will-not even when I’m gone. So, how do you expect her to forgive you?”

The man paused, his eyes clouded with confusion.

“Son, if you keep going like this, your ending could be even worse than mine,” Robert added. “At least, I have a son who’ll bury me. You’ll have nothing.”

“Shut up!” the man snapped.

Robert shrugged. “Fine, I’ll stop. So, what’s the plan? Are you just going to sit here keeping watch?”

The man stayed silent.

“All right, then keep watching. I’m going to nap. I’m beat.” Robert reclined his seat and closed his eyes.

The man whipped his head around. Robert waved a hand. “Relax. I’m not dead yet.”
