Chapter 486
“Sorry, we’re late.” The door opened, and a classmate walked in, followed by Vance.
His eyes met Rebecca’s in the air.
Jenny froze, then tugged at Rebecca’s sleeve and whispered, “I didn’t know he was coming.”
The guy who had brought Vance grinned casually. “Vance is back in town, so I invited him along.”
Vance stood awkwardly by the door. “I thought you were in France.”
He didn’t use anyone’s name, but everyone knew he was talking to Rebecca.
She was momentarily lost for words. If she had known Vance would be there, she never would have come. But she had assumed he was still in France and never imagined she would run into him at a domestic classmates’ gathering.
For a moment, Vance considered turning around and leaving, but that would only make things more awkward. The others probably hadn’t noticed anything unusual yet.
If he lay low for a bit, it might be fine. Making a big scene would only embarrass Rebecca.
The person who had invited him was his old basketball teammate, Jethro Hart.
“Vance, sit here,” Jethro said, pulling him toward the empty seat beside him. “There are exactly two spots left.”
Vance sat down, and Jethro opened a bottle of wine.
Vance refused to drink. Rebecca used the excuse that she was on medication and couldn’t drink. The others ended up finishing most of the first bottle, then opened a second.
Everyone chatted while eating, reminiscing about funny stories from high school. As the alcohol took effect, the conversation gradually slipped out of control.
Obadiah had always harbored resentment toward Vance. Once drunk, he pointed straight at Vance and cursed, “If it weren’t for you…”
Still sober, Jethro quickly covered his mouth. “That’s enough, Obadiah, What’s the point of bringing this up every time?”
Obadiah slapped Jethro’s hand away. “I know you’re close with him, but wasn’t Rebecca innocent? So many people liked her. She would have been better off with any of them!”
Rebecca was confused. Why were these guys dragging her into their argument?
“Rebecca, did you know that any guy who tried to give you snacks or write you love letters got beaten up by Vance? “Obadiah’s face was flushed red from drinking. “This guy was full of dirty tricks!”
She realized what was going on and glanced at Vance, who happened to be looking at her. The lighting in the private room was dim, making it difficult to read the emotion in his eyes, but her heart remained still.
Time had passed. Those things from many years ago no longer mattered. Whether other boys had liked her made no difference to her now.
“What’s your problem, Obadiah?” Jethro huffed. “Why do you bring this up at every reunion? It was all in the past! Let it go! They’re already divorced. If you care for her so much, then chase her. You’ve been single, and she is right here. Go for it!”

“Jethro!” Vance suddenly raised his voice.
He had been silent the entire evening, but now he sounded angry.
“Am I wrong?” Jethro countered. “He never stops doing this. Who is he trying to embarrass? If he really cared about her, would he have mentioned ancient history every time?”
“I’m sorry. He’s drunk. I’ll take him out.” Vance grabbed Jethro’s arm and dragged him toward the door.
