Rebecca raised an eyebrow. “You have quite a broad knowledge base. How come I never heard of them in France?”
“You know, those entertainment companies released some reels overseas. Anna watches them when she studies English,” Vance explained.
Rebecca nodded, and he added, “Is Desmond good to you?”
She thought about it carefully. “Yes. He’s nice.”
“That’s good,” he said quietly.
They fell silent again. Even though cars were honking and traffic was heavy, the space around them somehow felt strangely quiet, as if separated from the noisy world.
Rebecca checked her phone. Her car was still four minutes away and currently stuck somewhere. She decided to go back inside the restaurant and wait.
Just as she was about to move, Vance spoke again. “You and Desmond are both dance majors. You have common goals and can support each other professionally. That’s nice.”
She paused, unsure of what he meant.
Reading her confusion, he explained, “It’s nothing. Just wanted to wish you well. I hope from now on, you will always be happy.”
She nodded. “That’s for sure.”
He smiled faintly once again, which reflected his peaceful state of mind.
Still draping over Vance, Jethro suddenly clicked his tongue and poked Vance’s chest. “That’s a bitter pill to swallow. Wishing her happiness.”
“You’re drunk. Just shut up.” Vance grabbed his hand and pushed it away.
“I’m drunk? But my head is clear,” Jethro snorted. “Are you really going to spend the rest of your life hiding in that little cookie shop like an old man, living with that French woman?”
Vance frowned, but before he could respond, their ride arrived.
He turned to Rebecca. “You and Jenny go first. I’ll change the route.”
“No need. Mine should be here soon. You go ahead,” she replied, checking her phone again.
Her car had finally started moving. Now it was four minutes away.
Vance didn’t insist. He opened the car door and pushed Jethro inside. Then he turned back and said to her, “I’m doing pretty well. I’ve had glory and rock bottom. From now on, two people with a simple life and a little shop are good enough.”

She was confused. She had never asked how he was doing. Why was he suddenly telling her this?
He got into the car, and it slowly passed Rebecca. He rolled down the window and gave her a small smile. “Goodbye, Rebecca.”
There was something strange about that smile. It felt like a final farewell. She stood frozen in place and forgot to respond, thus missing the sadness in his eyes as the window went back up.
The spot on his chest where Jethro had poked was aching fiercely. It wasn’t just bitterness.
Rebecca’s ride finally arrived six minutes later. She helped Jenny into the vehicle, dropped her off at home, and then headed home.
She had never imagined that this trip back to Soliaridge would turn dangerous. All the danger should have been removed. Not even Hugo had expected it.
During the few days she had been back, she had gone out shopping and eating with Jenny every day without any problems.
But after she dropped Jenny off, the moment she stepped into the elevator, she was grabbed from behind. A hand clamped over her mouth and nose.
