Chapter 512
Vance glanced at Anna and chuckled, She smiled instead of getting mad.
Jenny was baffled, not expecting them to react that way. She glanced at Rebecca, as if saying, “Do you understand these people?”
Rebecca gave a helpless shrug, having no idea either.
Over dinner, Rebecca learned quite a bit. Whenever Vance returned to the States, he came here for meals and brought Anna with him. He stayed somewhere else, but all his eating and drinking happened at the Hortons’.
The couple treated him with genuine warmth, as if he were part of the family. Watching how comfortably he interacted with them, Rebecca had the strange thought that this man was good at almost everything, except being a husband.
He was a good boss, a good friend, and a good junior, but not a good husband. At least, not a good husband to her. Maybe he was different with Anna.
The main reason she had come today was to check on Darren’s parents. Seeing them doing well put her mind at ease.
When it was time to leave, Vance offered to ride them off, but Rebecca declined.
She used to dislike having bodyguards follow her everywhere, feeling it took away her freedom. But after the kidnapping and with Catherine still missing, she now brought them whenever she went out.
It would have been inappropriate to bring them inside the house, so she had given them money to eat nearby. Now they were already waiting in the car.
As Vance walked over to talk to her, she couldn’t help sighing. “Sometimes, I think you’re actually a decent person. Other times, I think you’re lower than an animal. Then you do something halfway human again. You’re kind of a miracle.”
She grabbed Jenny’s arm and walked out. The bodyguards Gabriel had assigned were already there to open the car door for them.
Vance watched her leave with a bitter smile.
“Lower than an animal?” Anna repeated the phrase with her slight accent. “What does that mean?”
Vance winced. “It’s not a nice thing to say. Don’t learn it.”
She insisted, “But what if someone calls me that? I won’t even know.”
Vance glanced at the car pulling away. “How could anyone call you that? You’re too sweet for anyone to insult.”
Anna’s eyes dimmed, and she let out a quiet sigh.

“Come on,” Vance said. “What else do you want to eat tonight? You finally made it to the States. We’re going to make sure you have the full experience.”
But Anna was already typing and searching on her phone. She looked up and said, “You must have done something really bad to her, right?”
His smile froze.
“Scumbag. Lower than an animal…” Anna recited the new phrases she had just learned.
He looked at her helplessly.
Rebecca hadn’t even made it home when Desmond’s video call came in. He told her his flight was landing in Soliaridge the next day.
Then he noticed Jenny sitting beside her and asked where she had been. Not hiding anything, she told him she had gone to visit

Darren’s parents.
Desmond made a little huffing sound, his eyes turning soft and watery. “The second I take my eyes off you, you’re running around everywhere. Not Dehaving
Jenny nudged Rebecca and mouthed, “Love is definitely in the air!”
Rebecca smiled, but she didn’t think it smelled like love. Lately, she had started to feel suffocated. She could already guess what he would say next. 1
Sure enough, Desmond continued in that familiar jealous tone, “The guy’s gone, but you’re still thinking about his parents.”
