Chapter 513
Rebecca suddenly felt drained She didn’t want to answer, but with Jenny there, she kept her smile.
“You’re still smiling?” Desmond protested. “Who else from your class was there?”
Rebecca hesitated about mentioning Vance, knowing that if she did, he would get upset. Besides, it wasn’t planned but was a
sheer coincidence.
But lying didn’t feel right. He minded so many things. Did she have to lie about everything for the rest of her life?
That pause was all it took. His expression shifted. “Don’t tell me Vance Bradford was there, too.”
“Yes,” she admitted. “But we didn’t go together. He visited on his own.”
“Really?” The jealousy in his voice grew thicker. “You two surely have great timing.”
She sighed inwardly and tried to stay patient. “He and Darren were close. Now he treats Darren’s parents like his own. Whenever he’s back in the States, he basically stays with them.”
“Oh.” Desmond’s tone got even more acidic. “He’s such a good guy in your eyes? Taking care of the elderly like that.”
She went quiet, though she kept the smile on her face.
He finally realized he had gone too far and quickly changed the subject. “Well, my flight starts tomorrow around noon. Can you pick me up? Then we can go grab some paella.”
She pulled herself together and took the out he had offered. “Sure. I’ll book the table right now.”
He grinned. “Then I won’t keep you. Have fun with Jenny. See you tomorrow.”
“See you tomorrow.” Rebecca ended the call.
Jenny looked at her, eager to say something.
“Just say it,” Rebecca told her.
Emotions were contagious. Even the smallest shift could be felt by those closest to her.
“Well…” Jenny began, “I don’t know him well enough to give advice, but you know what he’s really like. Honestly…”
“What? You think we’re not a good match?” Rebecca felt uneasy.
“Not really,” Jenny said carefully. “I just hope you end up with someone who really fits your soul. Maybet’s Desmond, maybe not. You have to decide. The main thing is that you are happy. If not, well, you know what I mean.”
Rebecca nodded. “I know. I just think any relationship needs work. If it’s not a deal-breaker, we should try to fix it together.”
“Exactly. You know what you’re doing. I just don’t want you to be unhappy. Life is too short. We’re almost halfway through our lives. Don’t waste your best years being miserable, no matter who you’re with.” Jenny pulled her into a hug.
“Okay,” Rebecca murmured.
“By the way,” Jenny added, “they’re planning another classmate reunion. Jethro Hart is organizing it. He said last time got ruined because of Obadiah, so he wants to do it again while he’s back for a couple of months. He asked me to invite you. Vance said he wouldn’t come, but we both know how that usually goes. Somehow, he always shows up when you’re around.”
Rebecca thought about Desmond’s reaction and decided against it. She wasn’t going, whether Vance showed up or not.
