Chapter 515

Vance stayed calm and gentle. “I wouldn’t come if it weren’t important.”

He held out a dust-proof garment bag. “Your bag. The police found it. Everything is still there, including your phone. I don’t know if anything’s missing. Check it yourself.”

She took it and quickly looked through. Everything seemed to be there.

“I don’t have your number, and the shop was busy during the day. That’s why I came at night,” he explained, his voice carrying a note of helplessness. “Besides, he’s with you all the time. He wouldn’t be happy if I showed up then.”

She frowned. “You have Gabriel’s number. Why come to me?”

He gestured with palms up. “I only have his U.S. number, and he’s not in the States right now.”

“Then why didn’t you just drop it off at the clinic? I’m there every day,” she countered.

He smiled bitterly. “What would I say if I dropped it off there? Whose bag is this? Why do I have your purse, your phone, and your wallet? Should I tell them you’re my ex-wife?”

“That’s enough,” she cut him off.

“The police recovered it. When they tried calling you, your phone was off. They reached me instead, and I brought it to you.”

“The police trusted you with it?”

“Yeah. I told them you’re my ex-wife and showed them the divorce papers.

“You’re lying. Why would the police hand someone’s stuff to an ex-husband?”

He hadn’t actually said that, but it didn’t matter. The bag was back.

“If there’s nothing else, I’ll head out.” He glanced around. “Gabriel probably still has people watching you, right?”

“Yeah. They’re here.” She knew the bodyguards stayed out of sight so they wouldn’t disturb her, but they were always close.

“Good. Be careful these days. Catherine…” He paused, getting mixed feelings. “We’ve confirmed she’s in Europe. You should tell Gabriel.”

The mention of that name made Rebecca explode. “This is all your fault!”

“Yes,” he said quietly. “I feel guilty about it.”

“Save it! You can feel guilty for the rest of your life! How many sins does a person have to commit before they spend every day feeling guilty?” she snapped, hating that word.

Five years ago, he had married her out of guilt. During their entire marriage, the only thing he ever felt toward her was guilt, so he threw money at her to make up for it.

Then he hurt her all over again. And now, here came the guilt again. It was an endless cycle.

“Okay. I’m leaving. Stay safe.” He walked away and disappeared into the night.

From the darkness behind her, a voice suddenly spoke. “He’s gone. You’re still staring?”

She turned to see Desmond walking toward her with a sullen expression.

“I wasn’t staring at him,” she tried to explain.

“Whether you were or not, why do you two keep running into each other?” He snatched the bag from her hands.” What did he bring you this time?”

She didn’t resist. He pulled out her purse, then started taking everything out.

“Why is he delivering your bag?” He held up her phone. “And why does he have your phone? You’ve been divorced for so long. Haven’t you cut all ties yet?” 1
