Chapter 516
That was the exact awkward conversation Rebecca didn’t want to have.
A wave of exhaustion washed over her. Even her voice sounded tired. “Did I tell you about the kidnapping? Did tell you I lost my bag and my phone?”
Desmond paused. “Even so, he didn’t have to bring it to you in person. A proper ex should disappear like they’re dead.”
Rebecca didn’t feel like explaining anymore. “What do you want me to do? I didn’t ask him to come.’
“You always say that. You didn’t ask him. You didn’t plan it… So, does that mean you two just have some special connection?” he blurted out.
Rebecca felt an old wound rip open again, fresh and bleeding. She had gone through so much pain to leave Vance behind. And now, Desmond was using that pain against her.
How could he say that?
She had thought he understood, having shown him every scar without holding back. She never expected those same scars would become weapons he used against her.
She offered no more explanations. She simply turned and started walking home.
Desmond panicked at her reaction. He ran after her and wrapped his arms around her from behind. “I’m sorry, babe. I’m so sorry.”
For the first time, she pushed against his hug.
He held on tighter, refusing to let go. “No, don’t do this to me. It breaks my heart. Don’t ignore me.”
She couldn’t break free, feeling suffocated in his embrace. “I told you from the beginning that I was married to Vance for five years. That fact isn’t going to change. If that bothers you this much, please think it over. I can handle whatever you decide.”
That was basically a breakup.
His embrace tightened further. “No, I don’t want that. I’m not bothered, really. I… just love you too much. I can’t stand you being close to anyone else.”
“I wasn’t close to him.”
“I know. He came to you, not the other way around. I’m sorry. I just lost it for a second. I swear, from now on, I’ll never act like this again.” He turned her around and pulled her against his chest. “I’m sorry. I just… love you so much.”
She closed her eyes in exhaustion, saying nothing.
“I made your favorite. Let’s go home and eat, okay?” He crouched down. “I’ll carry you, like when we were kids and dads gave shoulder rides.”
“No need.” She started walking ahead.
“I can handle it. I lift you in dance all the time. Come on!” He grabbed her hand again.
She shook her head. “No.”

“Babe…” He gave her those puppy-dog eyes again.
“Let’s just go home,” she said curtly, thinking of all the meals he cooked for her and all the times he had stayed by her side during recovery.
In this relationship, he really had given a lot. But something inside her had already been planted-a small seed of doubt.
Gabriel had once told her, “We don’t need you to get married again. Just stay happy.”
Jenny had told her, “Sweetheart, I don’t want you unhappy. Life is too short. Don’t waste your best years being miserable.”
