Chapter 523
Rebecca spun around to face him. “I’m not mad about the shop. I just think everyone deserves their own space. We should focus on living our own lives and let other people live theirs. Vance has had nothing to do with me since the day I divorced him. I don’t know how many times I’ve had to say that.”
“He shouldn’t be around you!” Desmond snapped. “He shouldn’t be buzzing around you like some damn fly! And you’re fighting with me over him? Whose girlfriend are you supposed to be?”
“Did I start a fight? Yesterday, you walked out without a word and shut me out.” Rebecca tried hard to keep her voice steady. “I was just shocked. I couldn’t believe you would do something like that. It was an invasion of someone else’s space.”
“I invaded his space, so what? You said he means nothing to you anymore. So, why are you mad now?” Desmond
fumed.
Rebecca didn’t know what to say. It was only morning, and she already felt drained.
“Desmond,” she said, making one last attempt, “everyone needs their own space. It doesn’t matter whether we’re talking about Vance, you, or me. Any relationship without breathing room will eventually suffocate the people in it.”
“I don’t get it,” he said. “You can talk to me about space all you want, but what does Vance’s space have to do with you?”
She reasoned, “I never said it does. Can we please focus on the actual issue instead of making everything personal?
He countered, “But you are making it personal! You got mad the second his shop closed!”
“Forget it. Let’s just go to rehearsal.” She gave up and started to walk away.
Halfway across the yard, she realized he wasn’t following her.
“You don’t need me to drive you anymore,” he said, his voice dripping with bitterness. “You seemed pretty comfortable with the bodyguard last night. No space issues there, right?”
Her temper finally flared. “What about the bodyguard and me?”
“They ride you home, catch you when you almost fall, and give you a massage. Pretty nice, isn’t it?” he scoffed, full of grievance.
He hadn’t slept all night thinking about it, and she was just fine.
“I…” She suddenly saw no point in explaining herself. “Think whatever you want.”
She walked out onto the street. Aaron was standing by the car, looking hesitant. He had assumed she and Desmond had made up, so he wasn’t sure if she still needed a ride.
But the next second, Rebecca climbed straight into the backseat.
Desmond showed up just as rehearsal was about to begin. Rebecca had already decided that if he didn’t come, she would have to use the understudy again.
At least, he understood what mattered most. Even so, they fell into a full-blown cold war.

After every rehearsal, he left immediately, no longer waiting for her, picking her up, or cooking for her. He even stopped accompanying her to rehab sessions.
She didn’t know what he was trying to prove, but she began to wonder: Just because she was a few years older than him and had been married once before, did she always have to be the one coaxing him?
The rehearsals were incredibly intense. The entire troupe was working together as one, determined to shine at the Edinburgh International Festival. No one could afford to slack off.
