Chapter 526
Aaron stepped out of the car as well. Only then did Rebecca climb out, steadying herself on the door.
“Vance…” She finally found her voice again. “How did you happen to be there?”
He shrugged without saying anything.
“Tell me!” She burst out.
With two cotton balls stuffed in his nose and his face badly swollen, he looked almost ridiculous.
“I told you, the whole thing started because of me,” he sighed. “Catherine is in Europe now, and I’m worried about your safety. Desmond hasn’t been picking you up, so…”
So, while she had been rehearsing in the evenings, he had been quietly patrolling the campus and the surrounding
streets.
He had never imagined something bad would really happen. It must have scared her deeply. There had been blood all over her neck earlier, and a smear remained by her ear that hadn’t come off.
He reached out and gently wiped it, but the dried blood stayed put. “It’s dry now. Go inside, wash up, and get some sleep. Have Aaron stay with you at the house.”
She frowned, staring at him.
He waved it off. “You don’t have to worry about me. Consider it my repayment. You know I owe you so much that I could ever make it right. This is nothing.”
“I wasn’t worried about you,” she said, turning toward the house. “And stop smiling. It looks terrible.”
The smile immediately faded from his swollen face.
Aaron handed the car keys to the bodyguard so he could ride Vance home. “Remember to pick us up tomorrow morning. Ms. Perry has a nine o’clock flight.”
He then walked Rebecca inside.
Vance didn’t wait for them to reach the door. He climbed into the car as fast as he could. The second the door shut, he couldn’t hold it in anymore.
He grabbed the wad of tissues Aaron had given him, pressed it to his mouth, and coughed up a mouthful of blood. The white tissues turned bright red.
The bodyguard, who had just opened the driver’s door, jumped in shock. “Sir, do you need me to send you to the hospital?”
Vance leaned back against the seat, fighting the searing pain rolling through his body. “Yes, please. And don’t tell her. She’ll worry.”
The car sped off into the night, and the curtains in the house next door dropped back into place. Desmond stepped away from the window and sank onto the sofa, looking deflated.
Denise couldn’t stand it. “What are you thinking? You stopped picking her up, walking her home, and taking care of her. And now, you’re hiding here spying on her? What is that supposed to mean?”
Desmond snorted. “She doesn’t need me anymore. I’ve been gone for just a few days, and she’s already running back to her ex.”

“That’s a pretty ugly way to put it,” Denise said, clearly disgusted. “Don’t you think you’re being too harsh? How is she running back to her ex? Maybe he was just giving her a ride. It’s dark out there, and it’s not safe around here. You didn’t show up, and now you’re mad that someone else did?”
“She has those bodyguards,” he grunted. “Why does she need her ex to give her rides? And did you see him touch her face just now?”
“So what? Maybe there was something on her face. How can you not trust her? If so, why are you even with her?”
“How can I trust her? I stop showing up for a few days, and she lets the bodyguard stay overnight in her house!” he growled. “The bodyguard is a guy. Don’t tell me they’re just hanging out!”
