Darren smacked his forehead. “Shoot! I got so caught up in the game that I missed my stop.

Rebecca shrugged, getting off the bus. To her surprise, Darren followed right behind her. She had already walked a good distance before she heard footsteps jogging to catch up.

He wore a helpless, slightly sheepish expression. “My friend just called and said he had to leave suddenly. I’ve got nowhere to go now. Any chance I could come to your place for dinner?”

Rebecca blinked. “Why don’t you just go home?”

“If I go home, I’ll be alone,” Darren said with a cheeky grin. “My parents are overseas on business again.” Rebecca was lost for words. But then, she remembered that Darren had died in real life. His parents, who were in international trade, had taken him abroad for college right after high school.

A pang of sympathy hit her, even in the dream. “Fine. Come with me.”

Darren’s face lit up with genuine delight, and he immediately fell into step beside her. She soon discovered that he was surprisingly entertaining.

He could get excited over the smallest things. He always wore his emotions on his sleeve and had a naturally sweet way with words. By the end of dinner, he had Josette beaming from ear to ear, laughing heartily.

When it grew dark, he knew better than to overstay his welcome. He thanked them warmly and took the bus back by himself.

“Becky, is this a new classmate of yours?” Josette asked curiously. “I don’t remember seeing him at the parent-teacher meeting.”

Rebecca knew exactly what worry lay behind the question. “He’s from the class next door. He came looking for a friend today but couldn’t find them. His parents are often away from home.”

“Oh.” Josette nodded and didn’t press further.

In her previous dreams, the scenes had always taken place at school. This was the first time she had seen her grandmother at this age. Josette had not yet suffered that terrible abuse and still looked energetic and healthy.

“Grandma…” Rebecca leaned into her arms. “Can I sleep with you tonight?”

“You always know how to act cute,” Josette chuckled.

Rebecca’s heart pounded as she lay in the familiar embrace and breathed in the faint scent of soap on Josette’s clothes. It felt far too real, like she had truly gone back to high school. How could she be talking so naturally with Josette inside a dream?

That night, surrounded by Josette’s comforting presence, she fell asleep. She thought if she woke up in

her Paris home, this would simply be an especially vivid dream.

What woke her was the barking of a dog from somewhere in the village-the same sound she remembered from back then.

She opened her eyes and found herself lying in bed alone. Josette had already gotten up and was probably making breakfast.

Rebecca sat up and looked around. The fragrance of flowers in the yard, the morning breeze, and the aroma of food from the kitchen all felt incredibly sharp and vivid. Who could dream of this level of detail?
