Rebecca had a bad feeling. But Vance had already spotted her, and his eyes showed no intention of letting her pass.

She walked over reluctantly. Vance was holding a copy of the entire class’s score sheet. As the monitor, he would have seen all the results first.

“Look at this,” he said, pointing at her scores. “Look at how you did! You didn’t pass a single science subject?”

She had nothing to say. It had been over ten years since she last touched this material. How could she remember it? Back then, she had struggled with science anyway; she had only chosen it for his sake.

“If you keep slipping like this, how are you going to get into college? Even as a dance student, with grades this bad, you won’t make it,” he lectured, sounding like the homeroom teacher.

“I know. I’ll work harder from now on,” she muttered, walking past him.

That day, the class assignments would be posted on the bulletin board.

“Wait! Where are you rushing off to?” Vance caught up. “Got a date with someone?”

She frowned. “What do you mean?”

Darren had been right about Vance treating her like a pet, playing with her when he was happy and kicking her aside when he was not.

Their five years of marriage had been exactly like that. He had kept her in a golden cage, giving her the best materially, but only coming home when it suited him. He never believed she could fly on her own.

“Thanks for the reminder. I know how to make my own choices,” she said evenly, walking past him toward the bulletin board. He followed, still convinced she would be in the science class.

He kept on chattering, “With these grades, you won’t get into the experimental class. Whose fault is that? You didn’t work hard. But it’s okay; there’s still time. Come find me for tutoring. I’ll help you catch up so you can be in the same class as me… Jenny.”

He paused and added, “Don’t slack off. Don’t listen to Darren’s nonsense. Start learning during summer break. The school has summer classes. After class every day, give your homework to Jenny and me to check. And I’ll give you extra assignments.
