“Good thing your foundation wasn’t too bad. If you work hard…” Vance continued as they reached the bulletin board.
It was already surrounded by students chattering about which class everyone was in. Cheers erupted whenever good friends ended up together.
Rebecca ignored the science section and went straight to the arts list.
“Hey, where are you going?” Vance started, then suddenly realized something and followed her.
On the list for the Arts Experimental Class 1, he saw Rebecca’s name.
“You lied to me?” His voice carried a chill that felt icy even in the summer heat.
Then silence. By the time she turned around, he was already gone.
Darren walked over, laughing. “Rebecca, we really are in the same class!”
His name was also on the Arts Experimental Class 1 list.
“I’ll treat you to dinner today to celebrate!” he exclaimed.
She didn’t agree.
Darren always talked about owing her a meal, but it wasn’t really a big deal. Besides, her parents had called, telling her to join them at a restaurant that evening to celebrate the stream selection and set an example for Emmett.
She didn’t go, aware of the scheme behind that meal. The same thing happened in the original timeline.
They had barely paid attention to her growing up. Whenever they reached out, it was never for anything good.
She hung up the phone, finished her school matters, and went to Josette’s house. She still had a few days to spend with her grandmother before summer classes started.
She never expected an uninvited guest. They had just finished cooking and were about to eat when footsteps sounded outside.
“Mom! Mom!” Soren shouted.
After more than a decade, Rebecca saw her father again, but all she could think of was how he had abused Josette. Hatred surged
inside her.

Soren walked in with Adeline and sat down without ceremony. There were only two dishes, but the couple quickly devoured most of the meat.
Rebecca angrily cleared both plates away.
“What are you doing, you wretch? Soren cursed.
Josette scowled. “What did you just say?”
