Soren struggled to hold back his anger. Whatever they wanted that day must be something big. Adeline tried to smooth things over. “Your dad didn’t mean it that way. If just slipped out ”
“Slipped out? That’s how you talk about your own child? Is that how a father should act?” Josette questioned, pulling Rebecca protectively into her arms. “You two should leave. I didn’t cook for you. Ga eat at your own home.”
“We didn’t come to scold Becky,” Adeline said hurriedly. “We have great news for her.”
Unimpressed, Josette firmly pointed at the door and told them to leave.
“Important guests are coming. Why are you kicking us out?” Soren said impatiently. “You think I want to come to this countryside place? It’s because… this stubborn girl refused to go to the restaurant. They set up a really big spread for her.”
He had almost called her a wretch again. Still, it wasn’t anything nice.
“Important guests?” Josette sneered, holding Rebecca even tighter. “They can’t be good people. You should leave I can’t entertain them.”
Soren threw down his knife. “You don’t know what is good for you! Think about who’s going to support you in your old age! Leave yourself a way out!”
“You…” Josette had never expected anything from him, but those words still hurt her feelings. “You ingrate!”
Rebecca knew this heartless man wouldn’t support Josette. Worse, he would later torment Josette viciously. The image of Josette lying helpless in filth flashed through her mind, and pain stabbed through her like needles.
“She doesn’t need you to support her!” Rebecca declared.
She led Josette into the inner room, locked the door, and walked calmly into the kitchen. Soren assumed she had given in and was going to fetch more food.
It was better this way, keeping Josette locked up so she wouldn’t cause trouble later.
“Becky, there isn’t enough food. Make more dishes. Can’t look bad in front of the guests,” Soren said, shaking his leg smugly.
Rebecca sneered and walked out of the kitchen with her hands behind her back.
“Did you hear me? Make more dishes. The big boss is coming,” Soren added.
Rebecca knew exactly who he was talking about. It was the village contractor, whose son was about the same age as her. The sleazy blond guy wanted to be engaged to her.
