Vance had no idea, only knowing she was preparing something.

On the evening of Irene’s last day in the hospital, after school, jethro slung an arm around Vance’s shoulders. “It’s the day after tomorrow. I’ve got everything ready. We’re heading straight to your place after school.”

Jethro wore an expression that said he was bursting to spila secret. “Vance…”

He grinned mysteriously, pulling Vance closer and whispering, “Don’t let it show when I tell you, okay?”

“What?” Vance remained composed, spotting Darren standing under a camphor tree downstairs.

“Rebecca has got a gift for you!” Jethro enthused, gesturing with his hands. “I saw what she was making!”

Vance raised an eyebrow. “What was it?”

“A universe crystal ball!” Jethro slapped his arm. “For real, I saw her working on it! That was two months ago, before we split into different classes.

“I saw her sketching and buying tons of materials. I looked it up; this thing can project onto the ceiling. It’s sophisticated, and she’s making it by hand.”

“You should change your name to Nosy Parker,” Vance snorted. “Is there anything you don’t know? How do you know it’s for me?”

“Because I saw the base. She engraved those words: Happy Birthday! Who else could it be for?” Jethro’s eyes glittered. “Don’t you think she put a lot of thought into it?”

Vance wasn’t impressed. “Girls just like making these fancy but useless things.”

Sensing something, he turned around and saw Rebecca standing just one step behind them. It was so embarrassing that he wished the ground could open and swallow him.

She understood his embarrassment perfectly.
