“Rebecca has got a gift for you!” Jethro enthused, gesturing with his hands. “I saw what she was making!”

Vance raised an eyebrow. “What was it?”

“A universe crystal ball!” Jethro slapped his arm. “For real, I saw her working on it! That was two months ago, before we split into different classes.

“I saw her sketching and buying tons of materials. I looked it up; this thing can project onto the ceiling. It’s sophisticated, and she’s making it by hand.”

“You should change your name to Nosy Parker,” Vance snorted. “Is there anything you don’t know? How do you know it’s for me?”

“Because I saw the base. She engraved those words: Happy Birthday! Who else could it be for?” Jethro’s eyes glittered. “Don’t you think she put a lot of thought into it?”

Vance wasn’t impressed. “Girls just like making these fancy but useless things.”

“Be honest, man. Are you guys…” Jethro clicked his tongue and wiggled his eyebrows suggestively.

“How is that possible?” Vance cut him off. “Don’t overthink it. We are just regular classmates. That’s all.”

Jethro’s enthusiasm was dampened. “Alright.”

Sensing something, he turned around and saw Rebecca standing just one step behind them. It was so embarrassing that he wished the ground could open and swallow him.

Vance, lost in his thoughts, noticed Jethro’s strange reaction and turned as well.

“Hey.” Rebecca waved at them. “Vance, has your grandma been discharged yet?”

“Tomorrow,” he answered stiffly, as if he didn’t want to talk to her.
